Miley Ray Stewart,[6] or Hannah Montana[2] is a fictional character played by Miley Cyrus from the Disney Channel Original Series Hannah Montana, and the main protagonist of the series. The series focuses on Miley, who leads a dual life as an ordinary teenager by the day and a successful pop singer, "Hannah Montana" by night. Nobody knows about her dual identities except her close friends and family members.

Miley Stewart is an ordinary teenage girl who lives a double-life as a successful pop sensation Hannah Montana.[2] Like the rest of her family, she is originally from Tennessee, and currently lives in California with her father Robby Stewart, and brother Jackson.[2] In his younger days, Robby too was a singer, and like Miley, currently leads a double life as Hannah Montana's father, manager, and producer under the alias "Robbie Ray".[2][7][8] Miley's mother died when she was young.[2][9] Roxy is Hannah Montana's bodyguard who protects her and her family, whether they like her or not.[3]
When Miley arrives at Seaview Middle School, she reveals her secret of leading dual-lives to her best friends, Lilly Truscott and Oliver Oken.[2][10] In the second season, she enters her brother's highschool alongside Lilly and Oliver.[11] Due to her double life, Miley is often in awkward situations (such as sleeping in late on a school day after a concert or going on date as Miley to a Hannah Montana concert).[12]

Miley's nemesis in school are Amber Addison (Shanica Knowles) and Ashley Dewitt (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle), who are constantly mean to Miley and her friends, but happen to be huge fans of Hannah Montana. Later, she gets used to her school, and even meets a famous teen actor named Jake Ryan (Cody Linley), with whom she has an on-off relationship.
Miley has a few signature phrases which she uses very often, such as "Ya think?!" (whenever someone states the obvious), and "Sweet niblets!", (usually when frustrated or in panic). The phrase "Say what?!" is also used several times by her and other characters (e.g. "Uptight mama's daughter say what?"). The character's comic persona is also known for being extremely deadpan, and Stewart has to contend with people liking Hannah Montana, but disliking her as Miley, and vice versa. This is especially evident when Hannah Montana interacts with her rival, Mikayla (who likes Miley), but in the episode "That's What Friends Are For?", she must accept being friends with her.
Miley also has a stuffed bear named Beary, who is seen in many episodes. She has had Beary ever since she was three (as was revealed in Me and Rico Down by the Schoolyard) and according to Miley, has been with her for everything. Beary was destroyed in the episode "(Bye Bye Ball)", when Jackson was trying to kill a wasp with it, but later in the episode, Jackson fixes it to make Miley happy. Miley has imagined three alternate looks for Hannah, and actually managed to adopt one; "Half Dolla Hannah", a Hip Hop stylist; "Techno Hannah", a Retro stylist; and the one she adopted was an unruly, angry punk-type personality, "Anti-Hannah".[13]
