[edit] Help needed with Eastbourne

I am trying to gather a small group of people to improve the Eastbourne article and writing to you as you have edited that page recently. I have set up a what needs to be done section on the talk page, and I am hoping that I will get a few people to start a discussion. It would be wonderful if you could spare a few minutes just to look at the current Eastbourne article and give your opinion. It would be even more wonderful if you could join in with this small project as well. Thank you MortimerCat 12:03, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Mortimer Cat left me the above note but I don't know how to get back to him! Sorry.

Mikeo1938 21:50, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

You can create your own Sandbox just by referring to a subdirectory of your user page. I have put a link on your personal user page. Click on this and it will create your own personal sandbox that does not get deleted.

To remove the stub indicator, just delete the {{France-mil-bio-stub}} tag that you will see when you are editing.

You have two choices when replying to a message. First, you can reply by editing your own talk page. Most users would watch the page, waiting for a reply. The second option is to reply on the persons talk page, which you can normally find by clicking on their name. Make sure you go to their talk page before adding a new section by clicking the + sign.

I think the first option is best, as it allows a conversation. You may also consider putting a message on the article talk page, in my case Talk:Eastbourne. It depends if you wanted to make a personal comment to me, or comments about the Eastbourne article.

There are different methods of creating references, some articles just list them as normal text. Others, like Eastbourne, use the <REF>...</REF> mark up. You only see them when you go into edit. Basically, the <REF> goes where the facts are. At the bottom of the page you will see </REFERENCE>, indicating where all the references are to be listed. If you are not sure what to do, put the reference in brackets, or leave details on the talk page. Other editors will gladly assist with the tidying up.

Welcome to Wikipedia, I hope I was able to help. I am still learning too, I did not know you could send Emails to other users. MortimerCat 00:20, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello MortimerCat and VMT for your comments.

I know quite a lot about E'bne and will be psd to help with the article.

But there's something which I don't follow about using a template to create a Harvard reference.

If you look below you'll see what I tried to do as an experiment. However, when I save it, it just comes out as a series of brackets followed by Last Year and more brackets.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Mikeo1938 11:09, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Experiment with template:

Ockenden, Michael (2006), Canucks by the Sea (Eastbourne ed.), Eastbourne Local History Society, ISBN 0 9547647 1 4

I have shifted the draft about Georges Catroux to the personal sandbox which you kindly created for me.

Mikeo1938 11:18, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

I can see where you are getting confused. You need to keep the parameter name in the template, setting it equal to your data. Surname=Ockenden not Ockenden= I have corrected the first one so you can see the difference. MortimerCat 13:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

OK VMT for sorting that out for me. I've looked at the articles for Bexhill, Brighton and Hastings. I see what you mean about the lack of references on our page. I have some books and will be able to trace a lot of the historical stuff. However, what are we to do when we create a sentence or paragraph which has been rewritten to form an amalgam of pieces of information from various publications? We can't refer to all of them in the one reference. I mean, references need not be straight quotes, surely.

In places, the existing article looks like something from a town guide.

Mikeo1938 22:10, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Good question. Some articles seem to source every fact, Chew Valley for example. Others just list the reference books used, Cleeve Abbey for example. I do not know the answer nor could I find an answer. Personally, if a source was used throughout the article, I would just quote the name in the reference section. If I just extracted a single fact or two, then I would link the fact to a footnote. MortimerCat 22:34, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

OK ... thanks for the comments. I'm getting the hang of it but have a problem. If you look in my new personal sandbox, you'll that at the end I've done a draft of the E'bne article. I tried to insert two references into the para about WW2. However, the Harvard refs have appeared within the paragraph instead of coming up with a numbered footnote reference at the end. What has gone wrong?

Mikeo1938 23:01, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

To make a footnote, you have to put the Harvard reference inside <REF>...</REF>. I also changed the ID parameter to ISBN. Although ID is correct, using ISBN I think makes it clearer to the reader. MortimerCat 23:16, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Also realise that, whereas I can read the list of references on the article page itself (Gunnell etc), I can't see them in the edit box or when I copy and paste the HTML text from the edit box into a Word document. Where are they and why can't I see them?

Mikeo1938 23:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Are you looking in the right place? Although the article page shows the references to be in the reference paragraph, when you are in edit, you will find the reference template next to the appropriate fact. The ones already on the Eastbourne page are slightly different to the Harvard ones. They use {{cite journal}} MortimerCat 23:23, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
As I have just done an edit on a section of the Eastbourne article, it occured to me that if you are editing in a sandbox, there is a danger you may revert my changes. Your sandbox version was copied before my edit. I apologise if you had already realised this, but you always need to be aware that other people can make changes whilst you are working elsewhere. MortimerCat 06:09, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

OK, I see that the article in my sandbox has come out OK so I might as well put that paragraph about WW2 into the main article. I will not copy the entire article in case there have been changes to the main article. Is this OK?

Mikeo1938 07:28, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, go ahead! The only recent changes to that section have been yours, so it will be safe. MortimerCat 17:49, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the update and comments. I merged your duplicated reference into a single one. This is done by calling the reference a name <REF NAME=WRIGHT>.....</REF>. I normally use the authors surname, but it has to be unique in the article. Then whenever you quote the same reference again all you need is <REF NAME=WRIGHT/>. MortimerCat 02:05, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

OK: I've noted the point about references. I went back later and removed a sentence from the text which I had somehow put into the references at the end!

[edit] Blue Plaque Table

I have been experimenting with tables finding some useful formatting techniques. As the Plaque table is still your baby, I reproduce my findings below. I will let you decide which options to use on the Eastbourne page. MortimerCat 23:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

OK. It looks fine the way you've done it. Pse post this for me.

[edit] Blue plaque article & multiple references

I would suggest that one reference will suffice if it says "Various issues".

Just so we do not duplicate our edits, I about to revamp the Districts section to the official Wards. I was wondering, do you live in Eastbourne. I was assuming you do, but then I saw the 3:41am edits!

MortimerCat 23:50, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello: yes, I live here for some 4 months of the year and am here now. That night I couldn't sleep for some reason. So go ahead with the change to districts. And when I've got the final bit of info, I'll add the para about the associations (Blue Plaques). All noted about the references. Mikeo1938 10:07, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Change of plan, I am going to work on politics. As the wards will be mentioned here, I had second thoughts about using them in the District section. I think the districts should be places such as Hampden Park, Shinewater, Roselands. Ones that Eastbourne residents refer to. However, I do not know where to obtain a complete list. Looking at you for inspiration. MortimerCat 22:35, 24 January 2007 (UTC) OK. Perhaps you should start with the wards and then we can insert sub-sections. For example Ocklynge is not a ward but could come within the notes about Upperton. Mikeo1938 21:24, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello again: What does this mean on my talk page?

"Someone else has changed this page since you started editing it, resulting in an edit conflict. The upper text area contains the page text as it currently exists (without your changes). Your version of the page (with your changes) is shown in the lower text area. You will have to merge your changes into the existing text in the upper text area to incorporate your edits. Only the text in the upper text area will be saved when you press "Save page"; all other changes in the lower text area will be lost."

I don't see a conflict. Mikeo1938 21:27, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Eastbourne Whoops

It was due to a mistyped reference. The rest of the article was still there, but it was being treated as a reference. But you still need to go in and correct the intended reference, it is appearing as blank at the moment MortimerCat 19:02, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Eastbourne - Good article

You may have seen that I nominated the Eastbourne article for a Good Article status. It has been assessed and has been put on hold for the moment. Various issues are noted on the talk page. It would be wonderful if you could see if you could help with any of these. MortimerCat 19:05, 23 June 2007 (UTC) OK: Just back from a week's holiday and spotted GA's list. As you see I've already started. Mikeo1938 21:53, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Belle Toute lighthouse addition

Thanks for the Canadian target practice details you added to Belle Toute lighthouse - it fleshed out that part nicely and adds significantly to the article. violet/riga (t) 20:06, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:River Neckar at Lauffen.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:River Neckar at Lauffen.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 14:10, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lauffen

Hello Mikeo1938,

we have discovered some small errors in the German version of the article and corrected them. You might want to have a look at what has changed. Regards --Rosenzweig 23:26, 2 November 2007 (UTC) Hello: Thanks for the message. I've been off the air for over a month and am now back in GB ... but no broadband. Will return to Lauffen page ASAP. Regards to all.Mikeo1938 (talk) 21:14, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] George Mallory's Eastbourne school

I've replied to your inquiry regarding Mallory's school in Eastbourne with a reliable citation. Check the discussion page on Mallory's article. --Bentonia School 13:47, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I do hope that I've already thanked you for the above ... perhaps I sent an e-mail. Anyway, belated thanks. The info about GM has been added to the Eastbourne entry. Mikeo1938 (talk) 22:18, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Neue Patienten

MvG. Mikeo1938 (talk) 09:26, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] St Cyprian's

Mikeo1928 - Many thanks for your kind comments. They are particularly appreciated coming from you Regards Motmit (talk) 21:57, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

OK ... and it's good to see the entry about St Cyprian's moving from strength to strength. Mikeo1938 (talk) 22:19, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I was counting on you to name that church - thanks Motmit (talk) 21:47, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
OK ... the pix are VG. Mikeo1938 (talk) 22:20, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
I have added Ascham St V. Regards Motmit (talk) 20:40, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the comments. I read that there were some 50 boys schools in Eastbourne and about as many girls. If there was an article listing all these historical schools that would be useful. We could start to pick some more of them off - I keep coming across other Eastbourne Alumni (30 now on St Cyps). Regards Motmit (talk) 19:02, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hailsham

Just popping in to say "Happy New Year".

If you are looking for a project, I have set myself a goal of obtaining GA status for Hailsham. MortimerCat (talk) 21:33, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about the delay. Also that I can't help with Hailsham. I hope to sort out the info on Ebne's water supply. BTW, a funny thing happend a little while back ... I was just in the process of altering the UTC time difference when suddenly you amended it! Mikeo1938 (talk) 22:16, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Major General Sir Edward Louis Spears

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Major General Sir Edward Louis Spears, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. For fine work copy-editing Pakistan Air Force Academy, please accept the Military history WikiProject WikiChevrons. --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:33, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the chevrons ... that was a pleasant surprise. I'll keep my eye open for other bits of editing. At present, I'm working on Sir Edward Louis Spears. Mikeo1938 (talk) 11:52, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Citation tidy up

Glad to see you are still watching Eastbourne. I thought I would attempt a FA status, and get a Gold star. I am sure its achievable. The only possible problem might be its size, we may have to create separate articles such as History of Eastbourne. I put in a request for a peer review, it will be interesting to see what they say.

I will go and look at your citations. MortimerCat (talk) 22:38, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

There is a problem in that the Eastbourne article is using three styles of citation template {{Harvard}}, {{Cite xxx}} and {{Citation}} . The rules say use any, but be consistent. So I am now in the middle of converting them all to {{Citation}} as that seemed to be the most common, it is now! Additionally, the Harvard template seems to be displaying some strange results which is probably what you were seeing. MortimerCat (talk) 01:14, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I have sorted out the citations, can you see if it has cured the problem you saw earlier. Have you seen Wikipedia:Peer review/Eastbourne/archive1 yet? Some good comments have been made. MortimerCat (talk) 19:54, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I have since realised by putting the {{reflist}} template at the bottom of the edit then doing a preview, you can see how the references will appear. You have to remember to delete the template before you save it though. MortimerCat (talk) 21:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Levanto

Thank you, dear colleague, for your very kind remarks. I know it is really ambitious for me to write in English. However, thanks to the help of wiki-friends, I hope to improve my active knowledge of a language I practiced briefly decades ago, and since cultivated only by reading.(How many mistakes did I manage to make in these few lines?)--Broletto (talk) 17:55, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

As you can see, now the verb is in the correct form. Anyway, in USA they write "to practice", says my Dictionary (but of course my model is British English).

Your idea is very fine, but unfortunately I have not yet a skype connection. If later I should have one, I would be glad to accept your offer. Have a nice day. --Broletto (talk) 10:42, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Meads

Thanks for checking into the article on Meads (in Eastbourne). Can you pse explain the CLR in curly brackets that is at the foot of the page? Regards from Mikeo1938 (talk) 14:39, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm no techie so can't explain with any precision. However the clr template clears the formatting and, in this case, caused the reference paragraph to appear below the picture rather than to its right. In other words it was only cosmetic. Of course if you are using a larger font size than medium the effect may well be invisibe. Hope this helps, Best Wishes Saga City (talk) 14:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
