[edit] Meta-puzzle
Well, I was going by the article content, which gave examples of metapuzzles both in puzzle hunts and in puzzle computer games, so I put it in both subcats. But if you know better, please do move it back: I would love to think that was the most dissent I had invited in my many article recategorizations. —Blotwell 02:11, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bill North vs Billy North
Hi Mike, I noticed you created an article on Billy North but there was already an article on Bill North. Seems to me "Billy North" would be the best choice for the article title, but the older article has more detail. Do you want to initiate the merge? Schmiteye 17:02, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thank you
For your support on the MetroStars vs RBNY issue. It's been a tough week for us Metro supporters, and many of us are having a difficult time with the transition, which for many will never occur. Every bit of support, for whatever reason, helps. DR31 (talk) 15:32, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Jeff Hamilton
I'm pretty new to Wikipedia work and can edit individual pages pretty well, but this is a bit bigger problem. Jeff Hamilton (player profile) plays for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL and is listed on the Sound Tigers Wiki page because he has a team record. However, that link leads to a Jeff Hamilton who played baseball. Obviously there needs to be a disambiguation page, but I'm not sure how to create one. Since you seem to be interested in the AHL, I was hoping you'd be able to help. Thanks. --MEvanov 22:48, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Art photographers"
Hello, I see you recently made an edit to Category:Art photographers. Assuming that this category is worth retention, your edit was one with which I fully agree. However, I don't think it's worth retention. Take a look at what people have written on its talk page, and on that talk page feel free to disagree (or even agree) with me. Thanks! [edit] Category:Baseball records subcats?
Hi. I'm the closing admin of the CFD regarding this category, and while I have the reverse merge properly decided...I'm afraid I couldn't figure out what you said needed to be done with the various subcat proposals. I'm contacting you three (Gene Nygaard, Mike Selinker, and Wknight94) who were most involved with the subcat discussions in the hope that between you all the subcat scheme can be accomplished. I'm sorry for being thick. ;) --Syrthiss 15:54, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Suicide Categories
Hello,
Nice work on the Suicide list. It may seem gruesome to some, but understanding certain facts about a person who has committed suicide helps someone in my line of work prevent others from doing the same. Among many other important elements are the person’s occupation (with its particular stressors), and the family culture (with its particular peculiarities and stressors), which they came from. Persons in creative, high achieving, highly competitive occupations seem to be at greater risk than others – likewise (and sometimes even more significant) are those who come from families with these same characteristics).
With this in mind, I have some suggestions for further subcategories: 1) “Celebrities’ family members who have committed suicide” (thinking of Cheyenne Brando among many others); 2) “Mass suicides” (like Jonestown, Guyana); 3) “Photographers who committed suicide” (they are considered ‘creative types’). That’s it for now. Thoughts?
Be healthy,

[edit] John Kresse
Do you think that John Kresse be categorized as a St. John's basketball coach if he was just an assistant coach at St. John's? I don't care either way, I just want to make sure that the categorization is the correct style. Remember 14:05, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Death from Alzheimer's Disease
Mike,
Another important Category I believe should be added to the causes of death lists is: 'Death from Alzheimer's Disease'.
I would create it myself, but I can't find an existing Article to change. I have my own reaearch data base listing various persons and their causes of death, and with this new category I can add the Alzheimer's deaths to Wiki.
I'm still a bit shaky when it come to creating new Categories, especially when it comes to the sorting code. Please consider creating this new Category and I can learn from your work.
Thanks,
- Michael David 12:57, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
ALSO IN ANOTHER AREA (I just dicovered this):
There are Categories: 'Assassinated Kings' - 'Assassinated Monarchs' - 'Murdered Kings' - & 'Murdered Royalty'.
Perhaps something could be done about combining these.

[edit] Category:American football plays
I'm not sure about putting The Catch (American football), Music City Miracle, and The Miracle at the Meadowlands into Category:American football plays, which was previously populated only with types of plays. I think the specific instances of plays are sufficiently clustered in Category:National Football League lore; what do you think? ×Meegs 15:15, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Afds
Hi, I am not carrying out a campaign against your category, I just want to determine whether people who have not done anything of note themselves but committed suicide should have their own encyclopedia article. Regards Arniep 20:44, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hey Mike, AfD can be a tough place and I hope you haven't taken my comments the wrong way. I'm just interested in ascertaining the notability of the individuals concerned (at least 2 of whom I've voted to keep) and the viability of the category per Wikipedia standards and policies. Celebrity-relative-suicide is undoubtedly an area of interest to some people but this might not be the best place to present it. Cheers, Deizio 17:55, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
I would like to echo some of he sentiments expressed here. What decent respectable encyclopaedia has a special heading Socialites who committed suicide. This is undoubtedly so that others can sit back and sneer at these unhappy souls. It is sick and completely unwarranted. Sussexman 15:01, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

If you want a lot of participation, you may want pop-in on Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs. It's probably a good idea for a proposal of this size. Their talk page's newest topic is even somewhat relevant. ×Meegs 04:38, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Inactive musical groups
Hi Mike. What is your opinion of Category:Inactive musical groups and its complement? I've though it was a bad idea from the beginning, and probably should not have waited this long to speak-up. Unless the two are to be oversized administrative cats like Category:Living people, they will inevitably need to be subdivided by genre and nationality, creating tremendous complication, and potentially doubling the number of musical act categories. You also know how I feel about dated category criteria. Any thoughts about CfDing it? ×Meegs 15:42, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] McDonald's High School All-Americans
Hmm... good question. I can't seem to access that alumni PDF for some reason (maybe I just need to reboot the machine), but if memory serves there really aren't that many girls that have been selected because there that's only been around for a few years. How many of those would qualify for an article based on the guidelines in WP:BIO? I think that number is probably very few. I would say leave them all in the same category for now and if it turns out to make the category unwieldy, then split them off at a later date. howcheng {chat} 00:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] BMX cyclist
Why are you removing the category "American Cyclist" from at the bottom of the BMX racer's bios?Hunter2005 01:14, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- Because I gave them all "American BMX riders" categories, or the equivalent. This parallels the way it's done for different disciplines of skiing. I was thinking of bringing it up on the "Cyclists" discussion page. Thoughts?--Mike Selinker 01:20, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- Are you doing the same for mountain bikers and cyclocrossers? If so then fine, if not then I don't see why BMXers should be excluded from the category of cyclist since they are racing bicycles.Hunter2005 10:26, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- You convinced me. I thought it might be wise to separate the BMXers from the general cyclists, but the bicycles that Tour de France riders use look a lot less like regular bikes than BMXes do. Anyway, I put them all back into the main BMX category.--Mike Selinker 14:27, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Mike,
I am going to be moving for the next several days. Included among the usual disruption and chaos that goes with this, I will need to stop - then reconnect - my Internet service. I don’t know how long this will take since I am at the mercy of my cable provider. As soon as I am reconnected I'll let you know.
Be healthy.

- Hello Mike,
-
- The nightmare of moving (both home & office) is finally over. After being trapped in an elevator for two hours – having to be extricated by the fire department; being rear-ended by a Lexus on the expressway; and a much needed complete re-working of both phone and cable lines – I can get back to the (very) relative sanity of everyday. I am considering proposing a new Wiki Category: “Persons who have suffered from post-traumatic moving stress disorder”. Oh well, it was an adventure. I look forward to picking up where I left off in Wiki.

Thanks for your efforts to get input from Lil Flip246 and your voice on the CFD discussion. [edit] How did I miss all this?
Hello. I'm the person who created the songs/singles category structure in the first place (in line with the Songs WikiProject). I know I'm too late but I do have to say that I strongly disagree with your merging of all these categories. I still see '[artist] singles' to be a valid and useful subcategory of '[artist songs]' (which is why I spent numerous hours creating and maintaining them). However, I do have a problem with the current system, myself. I originally created the categories called '[artist] songs' to hold songs recorded by that artist but this definition has become blurred and they now often contain songs written by, or played live by, that artist even if they never recorded them. I would propose to rename the whole lot to '[artist] recordings' or 'songs recorded by [artist]'. I'd like to know your views on this. --Moochocoogle 23:52, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Worms
I see you have moved several animal phyla to your new Category:Worms. I understand the intention behind it, but the way things were, there were categories for each animal phylum as direct children of Category:Animals. Now, several (largely unrelated) phyla are separated out as Category:Worms. Would you be offended if I changed this back, so that each phylum is represented equally? --Stemonitis 06:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Don't alter/remove Hello! Project categories
Mike,
I'm the founder of Wikiproject: Hello! Project. I noticed that you were removing and changing categories on selections related to Morning Musume and Hello! Project.
First off, I am reverting your edits for two reasons: One, is because Hello! Project is an umbrella for several J-Pop groups centered around Morning Musume and their many side projects, related bands, and solo artists. The other is because all of the single categories were changed to song categories in recent weeks by Wikiproject Music.
Being bold is nice, but you were going against the grain and the wishes of two Wikiprojects and their protocols and that simply isn't cool.

[edit] Category renaming coming?
Not to be too much of a bother, but we're trying to wind up with names of the form "Something of Country" rather than "Countryish something" (e.g. "Military personnel of Israel" rather than "Israeli military personnel"). ;-) Kirill Lokshin 19:43, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- Well, the issue that comes up with military personnel (as well as a bunch of other categories that use the "of country" formulation, such as ) is that lots of historical countries don't have adjective forms. This was the reason we moved away from them for battles and wars, for example. Kirill Lokshin 19:48, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- There's also the point that such people are usually categorized by country of service (like Category:Heads of state by country) rather than by country of birth, which rather complicates things. Kirill Lokshin 19:50, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Yeah, that seems like the best approach. I've asked for input from the rest of the project; hopefully, we'll be able to work out something sensible (and actually apply it this time!) Kirill Lokshin 19:55, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Scouting memorabilia collectors
I oppose this rename only because Scouting is a proper noun in English. If you capitalize it in the new cat name, I don't have a problem with the rename. If you leave it the way the cat name is now, the problem solves itself. Please respond on the cat rename page. Rlevse 10:08, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recording artist categories
Hi Mike. You need to watch out for categories which contain both the artists and the general stuff about the record label, including label discography, album subcategories and so on. These will need to have new "artist" subcategories rather than be renamed.
The category on my watchlist which matched this description is Category:KLF Communications. I've now created a new Category:KLF Communications artists and placed the artist articles into it. As such your nomination is no longer required and I've taken the liberty of removing the nomination tag. Thanks for bringing this matter to my attention! --kingboyk 15:58, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Song categories
Hi Mike. I've done a grep on the list of second-level song categories, to produce a list of cats which don't include the word "songs". I imagine most of them are OK, but there a few which you might want to consider (such as "Songs written by xxx" - should or should not this be "xxx songs"?).

[edit] What's the deal about Texas? (in/from)
How did this whole push get started with people worrying about the categories "Wikipedians in Texas" and "Wikipedians from Texas" getting merged? I ask because you mentioned on the discussion page that this is not even a nomination yet, and I was trying to figure out where you fit into the (apparently premature) discussion.Lawikitejana 16:35, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Rocket Science Userboxes
Hi, I noticed your post on my user talk page. Sorry about my inconsistency- I realized this after I had created my category. I will gladly move over to the more consistently named [[Category:Wikipedian rocket scientists]]. Nimur 18:08, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your contribution. Now I invite you to comment on the content :-)
[edit] WikiProject participant categories
Hi Mike, Since you're interested in - and seem to be something of a guru about - categorisation, would you please have a look at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Council#Category:Participants_in_WikiProjects? Your comments would be most welcome. --kingboyk 14:27, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The new cfr tag
See my changes to Category:Users who like waffles for an example. The big advantage of the new tag is that it provides a direct link to the relevent discussion, referring to Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 August 26 instead of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. It supports unbrella nominations fine, and the discussion link will continue to work, even when August 26 is no longer transcluded. -- ProveIt (talk) 15:38, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Category:Wikipedians interested in coin collecting or numismatics to category:Wikipedians who collect coins
Mike, I just got asked about this move. I recalled doing it, but I couldn't find the discussion. After searching around for a long time, I discovered that you added it to WP:CFD/W here even though there was no discussion for it. I will be reverting this change. Please do not add moves to the working page unless you close the discussion, and do not add moves to the working page when there is no discussion. Thanks. --Kbdank71 15:10, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedians using X CfD
As a friendly reminder: seems that you have forgotten to tag the two categories nominated for deletion with the appropriate CfD template for this CfD. --Pkchan 06:35, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
