Mikael Johnston : Sound Engineer / Producer

As the co-producer, engineer and songwriter for the Warner Bros. act "Mephisto Odyssey", Mikael Johnston has gained the reputation of an eclectic, pivotal in defining the nascent San Francisco house sound (SF Weekly Sept. 6, 2000). While signed to Warner Bros. Mikael expanded into the realm of engineer, producer and remixer. While at Warner he worked with various artists sharing the roster. He co-wrote the single "Crash" with Platinum recording artist "Static-X" and appeared in the video, which aired on MTV. He also did remixes for Los Amigos Invisibles, Static-X and Soul Coughing among others. Arguably his greatest success during his Warner days was his work as a co-producer, engineer and remixer for the Jane's Addiction maxi single "So What". The single, which prominently displayed Mikael's work as an engineer, remixer and co-producer on 4 of five songs on the play list, was also very successful charting in the Billboard maxi singles chart for 6 weeks.

Johnston got his musical start and influences from the rock and new wave scene of the 1980s, which is how he first met his long time collaborator and fellow Mephisto Odyssey founder Orpheos Dejournette. During the early 90s the two decided to put aside their guitars and rock roots to check out the as-yet-uncharted territory of electronica. It proved to be a wise career move for both of them. The duo's first single, the self-released "Dream of the Black Dahlia," earned kudos from Bay Area promoters and the international underground scene. Dejournette and Johnston continued to release singles on the Mephisto label and eventually were signed to the progressive West Coast record label City of Angels, where they shared the talent roster with future breakbeat kings "The Crystal Method".

Fast forward to 2005, Mikael continues to work with an eclectic and varied group of artists as a producer and recording engineer, which includes Epitaph recording artists The Matches, Smash Mouth, I am the World Trade Center, A live recording and mix with Rose Hill Drive that aired on San Francisco's 107.7 FM The Bone, and most recently for the European grammy winning Swedish band 'The Sounds' latest album, "Dying To Say This To You." Additionally his own music continues to appear in film and TV. In 2006 Mikael's songs have appeared in the Quentin Tarantino production 'Hostel' and on the MTV show, 'I want a Celebrity Face.'
