[edit] Education

Mike Pugh attended Auburn High School, graduating in 1969, and Auburn University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1974. He later earned a masters degree in physical education from Alabama State University in 1987.[1]

[edit] Coaching career

Pugh began his coaching career at John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, Alabama in 1974. At Morgan, he served as head basketball coach, interim headmaster, athletics director, assistant football coach and head track and field coach. Pugh's basketball team amassed a 177-32 record in eight seasons, winning the Alabama Private Schools Association state championship in 1978 and reaching the state semifinals six times. His track squads won two further state titles. In 1983, Pugh was named head basketball coach at Southside High School, also in Selma. Pugh led Southside to seven consecutive playoff appearances, five area championships, state runner-up in 1986, and an Alabama High School Athletic Association state title—the school's first—in 1985.[1]

In 1990, Pugh left Southside to coach at Carroll High School in Ozark, Alabama, where he spent five seasons, winning two area championships. Pugh began his first college coaching stint in 1995 at Enterprise State Junior College. At Enterprise State, Pugh was athletics director, head coach of both the men's and women's basketball teams, department head of the Department of Physical Education, and Director of Intermurals. In seven seasons, Pugh's teams won 110 games of 186. Pugh left Enterprise State for Opelika High School in Opelika, Alabama in 2001. Pugh turned around a moribund Opelika program, winning two area championships and taking the school to its first playoff appearance in the 90–year history of the program in 2003.[1]

Pugh was named head men's basketball coach at Huntingdon College on May 14, 2007. In his first year, Pugh improved the Hawks' record by six games, taking the team to the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament. After 35 seasons, Pugh sports and overall record of 614-277.[2]
