During his senior year he was second in the nation in scoring averaging 27.5 points per game and was named an NAIA First-Team All-American. After the NBA, Penberthy played four seasons (2001-05) with Basket Napoli of the Italian Serie A basketball league ending up the all-time leading scorer in team history. He then played for Germany's ALBA Berlin (2005-06) before returning to Italy in the 2006-07 season with Pallacanestro Reggiana, which then traded him to Udine later in the season.

He is married to Wendy Jones Penberthy, a former volleyball star at The Master's College.
