[edit] Biography

Mendoza has worked around the world within the radio industry, getting his start in Auckland, New Zealand. He has also worked in Australia, the United States, the French Riviera, Italy, and Monaco for an English Language radio station. He returned to UK in his late thirties, and has worked for the BBC, Radio Mercury, Southern Sound, Spectrum Radio, and LBC, before joining talkSPORT in 2004 where he remains.

He was presented as a case study by the UK branch of Action on Smoking and Health of someone affected by second-hand cigarette smoking (repeated chest infections), though he never smoked himself.[1]

Mendoza is Jewish and co-founded a London-based Jewish radio station, Shalom FM, in order to provide, he said, "some balanced reporting about the community and Israel."[2] Mendoza's former talkSPORT colleague Charlie Wolf presented a twice-weekly show on the station.[3]

A former member of the Conservative Party, he has served as a councillor for the party on Brighton and Hove City Council and nearby Adur District Council.[4][5] Mendoza represented the Peverel Ward for the Conservatives in the May 2002 elections. Shortly after resigning from the Conservative Party, he stood in the June 2004 elections for the Marine Ward on Adur District Council. He won the seat as an Independent, a week before it was announced that he would be joining talkSPORT. [1] He stood down as a councillor in May 2005.

Mendoza is a cousin of comedian and actor Peter Sellers, and a direct descendant of British boxing legend Daniel Mendoza. He also has a long friendship with the New Zealand actor Alan Dale.[6]

Mendoza is past chairman (5 times) of the Sussex region of the Variety Club of Great Britain; he also served as secretary for 11 years.[7] He was a charity co-ordinator for the Argus Appeal in Sussex[8], raising funds to help needy people, and is a supporter and past Chairman of a charity for children with cerebral palsy, known as Whoopsadaisy. He has publicised this charity, both on his personal website and on his radio programme.[9]

[edit] Controversies

On 20 August 2007, the BBC reported that the British radio station talkSPORT had been censured by regulator Ofcom because Mendoza and another presenter, Garry Bushell, made derogatory comments about gay people.[10] Commenting on the search for Madeleine McCann, Mendoza was heard to say "Paedophiles in general are the type of people that surely would not follow football... not many gay people to the best of my knowledge are great football fans", comparing homosexuals to paedophiles. He was suspended by the station for a week.

Due to content within a show that aired on 11 May 2006, Ofcom received a complaint - although Mendoza was subsequently cleared of "Crime Incitement". [11]

[edit] Current activities

At the moment, Mendoza can be heard Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings between 1 and 6AM on talkSPORT, and at the same time during the week when standing in for Ian Collins.

He revealed on his show on the 23rd December 2007 that he is a fan of Wikipedia, and that he also edits his page quite frequently, as people get a lot of his personal information wrong.
