[edit] Career ending injury

Lamar Smith, his teammate with the Seahawks, was charged with vehicular assault in 1994, when he was drinking and driving prior to a car wreck that left teammate Frier paralyzed from the neck down. Smith in a legal settlement was forced to pay a portion of his salary for his entire career to Frier.
