The Mike Felger Show is a local sports talk show that originates in the 890 ESPN studios in Charlestown, MA. The show is on from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M. Monday through Friday, and is also broadcast on YouCastr, the interactive sports network. There is a carousel of co-hosts in studio including Ryen Russilo, Andy Hart, Tom Casale, Joe "Haggs" Haggerty, Bob Halloran, and Bob Ryan. The show was formerly known as "The Drive with Michael Felger" but has since been rebranded as "The Mike Felger Show". The show also used to run from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. but made the switch to one hour earlier to make way for Metro GameDay.

Also included on the show is Sports Center anchor Kevin Winter. Besides providing sports updates every twenty minutes he steps in with his own commentary and take on the big stories. Ross Carey is the "Producer Boy" and is often referred to as Ross "Lisa Loeb" Carey because the glasses he wears are similar to those of the pop star. Ross is also referred to as "a 27 year old, seam head, untucked purple shirt wearing, Lisa Loeb glasses wearing slacker producer boy." Ross also takes lots of shots at Felger throughout the show. Mike Salk is also the on location Red Sox reporter who also covers for Kevin Winter when Kevin is not the Sports Center Anchor.

The Mike Felger Show has a regular rotation of ESPN and Boston Globe writers and personalities who come onto the show.

During baseball season Peter Gammons is now only heard on 890 ESPN and calls in every Thursday. Buster Olney checks in every Wednesday.

Football season has John Clayton every Thursday and Mark Schlereth on Tuesdays. Jeremy Green is also a popular guest.

As the Boston Celtics have become relevant again Chris Broussard is often heard as well.

[edit] Sound effects and sound bites

[edit] Shocker

The most often used, and perhaps famous, of the sound drops used on the show is the "Shocker" drop. The drop is nothing more that an echoed voice saying "shocker". The drop originates from a segment one time called "Shockers of the Week" which is rarely, if no longer run. Rather the drop is used anytime Mike Felger says something dumb, or something takes place that seems painfully obvious to the crew of the show.

[edit] Ca-Ching

More recently, when the producer Ross Carey hears Felger talking about one of his multiple ventures he plays cash register sound, most aptly described as "ca-ching".

[edit] Interview clips

Some regularly used sound bites are often played from infamous interviews-

  • A clip of Mike Felger struggling through an interview question with Peter Gammons in which he asks three or four questions before getting the one he wants out.
  • A clip of Mike Felger asking Red Sox reliever Brendan Donnelly why he signed with the Red Sox, Donnelly was in fact traded and says at the end "way to know your players".
  • A clip of Mike Felger awkwardly name dropping Gary Tanguay and Gregg Dickerson to Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers.
  • A clip of former New England Patriots Linebacker Monty Beisel having a meltdown in the locker room exclaiming "I'm a PR guy myself, and that's total bullsh*t!!"
  • Various clips of former New England Patriots Running Back Corey Dillon having expletive laced tirades and or meltdowns.

[edit] You wanna get high?

Drop used when Felger flubs a statement or someone the crew is talking about has been arrested on drug charges. The clip is from Towlie on the show South Park.

[edit] That's why they pay me the big bucks....

Much to Kevin Winter's chagrin, Ross Carey has played Kevin saying "That's why they pay me the big bucks and I'm on the network brother." anytime Kevin makes a mistake or whenever he feels like it. This was said on a day that Mike Felger was on a day off. Kevin was hosting at the time and went big time on the crew. Ross hasn't let him forget it, and much like your annoying younger sibling he played it for Felger as soon as Felger was back in studio.

[edit] heh heh

Clip of The Simpsons' Nelson Muntz laughing played when something funny happens at someone else's expense.

[edit] Chewbacca

Clip of Chewbacca speaking used when Joe Haggarty is spoken about. Joe's email address is chewbiedooby@aol.com as opposed to a normal email address such as mfelger@bostonherald.com.

[edit] You are terrible

Clip of New England Patriots Defensive Lineman Richard Seymour saying "You are terrible." whenever something displeases Felger or producer boy Ross Carey.

[edit] Infamous moments

[edit] Felger sings Madonna

On April 24, 2007 at approximately 5:45 P.M. 890 ESPN was knocked off the air due to a problem with the transmitter (during the bit detailed below), however 1400 was still on. The following day the show went on even without the show being broadcasted on 890. Before the last segment, unknowingly to the staff of the show, the station was back on the air. Felger was not aware of this and as they were discussing Tom Mutch and it found out that Mutch liked to sign Like a Virgin to his players. Mike Felger then busted into a falsetto version of the song shocking Wendi Nix who was in studio at the time. Mike Felger said he didn't care, since "were not on in Boston". After he was done it was then realized that he was back on the air and a humorous banter occurred between Ross, Mike, Kevin, and Wendi Nix.

[edit] Is Mike Felger smarter than a fifth grader?

In a bit that has occurred twice now, though once no one was able to hear it (see above), Mike Felger has taken on a fifth grader from Medford, MA in a battle of the wits. The first time, the fifth grader, Joey, won 12 to 5. Most recently, on May 10, 2007, Mike Felger won by a score of 13 to 7. This makes the two game set a score of 19 to 18 in favor of Joey, they will battle one more time for the championship.

[edit] Chronic on Chronic Crime

In what Mike Felger admitted was a "watershed moment for this little radio show" was when two of his “chronic” callers had a “Chronic on Chronic Crime” war of words where Mark in the Car ripped on Mike from Uxbridge for calling multiple other radio shows with the same exact call. Mike responded by saying Mark had “problems” and wouldn’t comment any further. Mark in the Car called back again to agree with Mike that he did indeed have “problems” and then proceeded to berate Mike from Uxbridge all over again much to the delight of Felger, Ross, and Kevin.

[edit] Felger goes Ballistic

On July 2nd, 2007 Mike Felger announced that most of his co-hosts have been disloyal and he is sick of "being a feeder show for down the dial". (Meaning ratings Monster in Boston WEEI 850 AM) He then said that Joe Haggerty, "Jersey" Bob Halloran, and John Tomase are all "dead to him" and will no longer be featured on the show. In the end it only seemed to be a joke, as the next week the regular rotation of co-hosts returned.

[edit] Chronic callers and emailers

Mike from Uxbridge- Talks about the "eye of the tiger" and multiple Red Sox farm hands. He reportedly calls numerous other talk shows (see above) with the same call.

Mark in the Car- Calls in with an opinion on just about everything, noted Barry Bonds hater. He also is a self confessed Curt Schilling apologist as well as a Jim Rome "clone". Mark will get on a roll quickly if Felger doesn't keep him in check. He will also challenge Felger when he disagrees with him most notably on the subjects of Ron Borges and Felger's opinion that Cal Ripken "could" have been on steroids. Mark called in and challenged Felger to "run that by Peter Gammons and see how fast you'll get verbally bitch slapped on your own show."

Mark the Angry Emailer- Emails daily with rants on just about any major sports story.

Link from the Fury- Semi-Pro football player who calls in from time to time with mainly football takes.
