Michael Barnes is a fictional character on the long-running Channel 4 British television soap opera Hollyoaks.
He is played by actor Tony Hirst.

[edit] Marriage to Kathy
Mike is the patriarch of the Barnes family. He was a constant irritant to wife Kathy, from his relaxed parenting methods, to his perceived lack of ambition where his job was concerned (Kathy was enraged when he quit his job, then was disgusted when he took a job at the local laundrette). Sensitive, affable, and laid-back, his daughters tended to favour him over their mother.
Mike rarely loses his temper, but when he does, it's explosive, such as the time he caught 15-year-old Amy sneaking home drunk, or when he found out his wife had slept with Rhys Ashworth, their daughter Sarah's boyfriend. The latter was the incident that led to Mike throwing Kathy out of their home. Kathy moved back in after the girls begged their father to give her a second chance. Mike found that couldn't stand to be under the same roof as his cheating wife, and moved out into his own flat. His daughters soon followed him, as living with Kathy without their father as a buffer proved impossible.
Mike and Kathy eventually reconciled for the sake of their daughters, but there is no telling how long this will last.
Mike's friendly nature has led him to strike up some unusual friendships. Most notably his bond with Amy's best friend Michaela McQueen who affectionatly calls him "Barnesy" and in return he calls her "Micks".
[edit] Accused of adultery and Baby Leah
In January 2007, Mike struck up a friendship with Tina McQueen when she started coming into the laundrette after the family washing machine had broken down. They bonded over a love of literature, and this led to Tina's boyfriend Dom thinking they were having an affair. This was soon settled after Mike and Tina explained the situation.
Mike had no idea that his daughter Amy was pregnant until coming home to find her in labour, but helped Sarah deliver his granddaughter Leah Barnes on the kitchen floor.
[edit] Conflict with Josh Ashworth
After reading Amy's diary, he came to the assumption that Amy was sleeping with boyfriend Josh Ashworth and took it upon himself to drag her out of school and to the doctor to put her on "the Pill". Although she tried to tell him that she wasn't sleeping with Josh, Mike refused to listen and wouldn't allow her to see him anymore.
Mike suffered a serious head injury after Josh hit him on the head with a brick, while defending himself. He had to have his long hair shaved off as a result of this brick related incident. When he came home, he gave Josh a choice; break up with Amy or Mike will press charges. Mike agreed to drop the charges against Josh after Suzanne Ashworth threatened to reveal that baby Leah was Amy's baby, and not Kathy's like the family had told the rest of the village. After a few months the truth came out anyway, as Michaela sold the story to a tabloid.

Kathy became obsessed with baby Leah, leading Amy to reclaim her own rights as a mother and cut Kathy off from the baby. An unbalanced Kathy kidnapped Leah. Mike had no choice but to phone the police, and Kathy was committed. A few months later, Kathy returned, although she was very shaky.
Mike then had to support his daughter Sarah as she found out her fiance Craig Dean was having an affair with best mate John Paul McQueen.
Ste Hay, who had sent Amy to the hospital with serious injuries after they'd gone joyriding, returned in September 2007. Amy soon warmed to him once again and let him move into the house and spend time with Leah. When Mike found out, he was so furious that he nearly pushed Ste down the stairs. Ste lied that he was Leah's father, and Amy went along. Reluctantly, Mike let him stay, but soon tensions between them were too much and Amy and Leah moved out with Ste. Mike got in contact with Ste's stepfather, who implied Ste would mistreat Amy and the baby. Mike pressured Sarah (who knew where Amy was) into telling them the address. They all went to see her, and Ste's stepfather immediately began beating him. Mike pulled him off of Ste and threw him out. Although he was upset at what he had helped cause, he told Amy he was only looking out for her best interests. Amy didn't want to hear it. She told Mike and Sarah to get out, and decided to cut off contact with them, although recently has forgiven Mike and Sarah.
A vendetta against the Ashworth's starte, terroising all of them. Hannah Ashworth and Beth Clement were suspects but it was found out to be Kathy Barnes. Due to this, Mike, along with the support of Amy and Sarah, threw Kathy out and told her their marriage was over. Kathy then left Hollyoaks.

Sarah befriended fellow student Zoe Carpenter and let her move into the Barnes' home when Zoe needed a place to stay. Mike became an invaluable shoulder for her to cry on following her breakup with Darren Osborne, as well as through her unsuccessful attempts to help rid Darren of his gambling addiction.
In January 2008, Mike and Zoe shared a kiss and were shown to have slept together after he and his estranged wife, Kathy, had split. Mike and Zoe entered into a relationship, although nobody knew about it initially as they chose to keep it to themselves. On the 29th January, while Ste Hay was getting a heater from the Barnes' house, Mike and Zoe came in and started kissing. Ste hid behind the wall, unknown to Mike and Zoe, and filmed them on his phone. Mike appeared to have doubts about their relationship initially by saying, "I'm forty years old, I should be sleeping with a hot water bottle, not a girl half my age."
On the 30 January, Mike revealed to Amy and Sarah that he had filed for a divorce whilst redecorating the house presumably because he wanted to continue his relationship with Zoe. However he still did not tell his daughters about it.
On the 27 February, Ste revealed Mike and Zoe's relationship to Sarah and Amy at Leah's first birthday party by sending the clip of the pair he filmed to them both. After discovering the relationship, Sarah moved out after giving her father an ultimatium, her or Zoe. Mike chose Zoe as he felt his eldest daughter was being childish.
On the 29 February, Zoe asked Mike to be her "official boyfriend" to which he happily agreed.
Soon Zoe will believe she is Pregnant and tell Mike. This is a false alarm but there relationship struggles through this point as Mike doesn't want another child.
