Mike Bailey (weatherman)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mike Bailey is an Australian former presenter for the weekday weather segment of the ABC Sydney edition of the 7.00pm news bulletin, which is also relayed to major parts of New South Wales. Bailey is also a lecturer in radio journalism at Macleay College in Sydney. He is also a noted MC and guest speaker.

Bailey was raised in Sydney and educated at De La Salle College, Ashfield, New South Wales.

Before entering politics, Bailey discussed the weather on weekday afternoons with Richard Glover on ABC Radio Sydney 702. He memorably mentioned that one of his jobs as a young man was "Bargain Sam", spruiking among other things ladies' underwear outside a Sydney department store.[citation needed]

On 22 May 2007, it was announced that Bailey had been approached to stand for Labor Party preselection for the seat of North Sydney to challenge the sitting member, Joe Hockey, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, in the upcoming Australian Federal election. He subsequently resigned from the ABC. Mike did not win the seat but picked up a swing of over 8% over the previous election.

Mike Bailey is not the first former ABC employee to be running against a Federal Minister. Another former presenter, Maxine McKew, challenged and defeated the Prime Minister, John Howard, in the adjoining seat of Bennelong [1].

In January 2008, it was announced that Bailey will present weather for Sydney's National Nine News on Fridays and Saturdays. Bailey will also be an environment reporter for National Nine News. It has not yet been revealed whether Bailey is still a member of the Labor party.
