[edit] Summary

Mihailo, King of Zeta Ston, a fresco in the Church of Saint Michael (Mihailo), about 1080

Mihailo of Zeta (1051-1081) received in 1077 the flag from Pope Gregory VII as the royal insignia and thereafter Duklja (Zeta) is referred to as a kingdom. In historical sources Mihailo is also known as "king of Slavs" and "ruler of Tribals and Servs".

According to this oldest preserved fresco-portrayal, we can establish certain symbols that show that we are dealing with royal ceremonial costume. First of all, there is the crown with its Western characterisics indicating its origin, namely that King Mihailo was crowned by the Pope. Furthermore, the bottom of his robe is adorned with a thick border, and his sleeves with decorative ribbons around the upper arm (peribrahion) and at the bottom edge (epimanikon). Those were elements of the royal ceremonial attire in the Balkans in the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries.
