[edit] Mifflin Gibbs: "Victoria's" Mifflin Gibbs?

Between 1858 and 1870 a Mifflin Wistar Gibbs resided in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He arrived in the colony of British Columbia from California at the time of the Cariboo Gold Rush, and became a prominent merchant and member of Victoria City Council in the 1860s, most likely the first person of African ancestry to sit on a municipal council in Western Canada, and quite possibly the first in all of Canada. Our history books do not record Mr. Gibbs as being a lawyer or judge, so I can't be certain that it is the same person, but the names are certainly interesting, and the time period is right, and Terry Reksten in More English than the English gives Mr. Gibbs' birthplace as Philadelphia.Corlyon 03:14, 15 November 2006 (UTC)Corlyon
