I don't think it is accurate to call "midori" green, as it is also used to denote the colour of the sky as well as the colour of the grass and the "free to go" lamp of the traffic lights.
- Well, as far as I can tell "Midori" (ja:緑) refers specifically to the English idea of "Green". Though I've been told that in Nihongo "blue" and "green" tend to cross over in meaning on occasion, that was in reference to the kanji "ja:青" and "ja:藍".
