Midwestern Governors Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Midwestern Governors Association[1] is a collaborative project between the governors of 12 states in the American Midwest: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. MGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, not affiliated with any political party, that brings the 12 governors together to cooperate on public policy issues facing the region. MGA was founded in December 1962 in Chicago.

In the past few years, MGA has worked to address issues such as homeland security, methamphetamine use in the Midwest, planning for the 2016 Olympics, the reauthorization of the farm bill, and the development of the ethanol industry.

On November 15, 2007, 11 MGA members and 1 Canadian premier signed the Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Platform[2], committing to work as a region on increasing energy independence and developing new sources of renewable energy in order to create jobs, enhance regional security, and improve the environment. The Platform is structured in four tiers, with individual governors signing onto the menu options of their choice[3]. The fourth tier of the Summit Platform is the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Accord.
