[edit] History
The college was founded 1883 in Atchison, Kansas, by German Lutheran immigrants. The school moved to Fremont in 1919. In 1962, Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, merged with Midland Lutheran.
Midland now offers almost 50 majors and programs, and is known for the strength of its nursing and education programs. The business program, especially in accounting, is another area in which Midland Lutheran College excels.
Responding to the ever-changing needs of higher education students, Midland has added several new programs of late.
In 2007, the college launched Midland iMpact, an adult degree completion program. Midland iMpact provides a more flexible, accelerated alternative for those who started, but never finished college, to obtain their Bachelor's Degree.
In the summer of 2008, Midland Lutheran College began to offer Online courses. Primarily designed for students seeking to complete their degree, Midland Online is also an accelerated, flexible method for finishing a degree.
The latest area of growth is the recent announcement of Midland's first graduate program. The Master's of Professional Accounting program begins in Fall 2008. Designed to appeal to a wide range of students, from high school seniors to working accountants, the MPA program will help make an already strong accounting program that much more appealing.
[edit] Traditional
Midland Lutheran College offers more than 50 programs and majors for students seeking more than just a basic education. Born in the liberal arts tradition, Midland strives to provide each graduate with the Foresight and Insight required to lead in their respective fields.
Foresight comes from Midland's outstanding faculty, who are not content to teach what HAS happened. Instead, instructors at Midland help students see the trends and research that are shaping the future in their areas of expertise.
This means that Midland graduates are not only prepared for their first day of work, but also their 3,001st day of work. By focusing on the future, Midland graduates are able to help shape the direction of their career fields, instead of allowing their careers to shape them.
Insight comes from the spiritual, philosophical and ethical grounding Midland students receive. While learning how to do your job ethically is important, learning about yourself and what job suits you is doubly so. By looking inward, Midland graduates are better able to see the big picture and not focus solely on themselves, which is what employers are seeking.
Midland Lutheran College also teaches Insight by helping students develop their Warrior Spirit. More than just the school mascot, the Warrior is emblematic of the confidence, pride in their job, and willingness to address problems head on that employers covet.
But the Warrior Spirit is much more than that. Throughout time, and across cultures, Warriors share certain characteristics. Warriors are honorable, honest, dependable, loyal, steadfast, and are leaders. When someone with Warrior Spirit enters a job interview, employers notice immediately. This spirit can only be found when students look inside themselves.
[edit] iMpact
Midland iMpact is an adult degree completion program designed to offer an accelerated, flexible path for students to complete their degrees.
Students who began college, but for one reason or another never finished, can transfer in their old credits, as well as earn college credit for their work experience. This feature, called Experiential Learning, is unusual in that Midland doesn't charge for these hours, as many schools do.
Midland iMpact classes meet one day, every other weekend. There are usually courses available on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. The every other week schedule allows students plenty of time for work, family, friends, and study. Courses are of the blended format, which means in addition to the face-to-face, personal time in the classroom, other work is completed over the Internet.
Currently, students can complete their degrees in business, criminal justice, nursing (RN to BSN), psychology, and human services.
[edit] Online
Midland Lutheran College Online is another path for students to complete their degrees from anywhere in the world.
Unlike some other online programs, Midland Lutheran Online provides a degree backed by the reputation, support, and faculty of a four-year college. Research shows that employers are skeptical about online degrees. There's no skepticism with a degree from a 125-year institution, such as Midland.
Existing college credit can be transferred in, which makes degree completion that much faster. Beginning in June 2008, Midland Lutheran College's Online offers courses in the following programs:
- Business
- Criminal Justice
- Nursing (RN to BSN)
- Creative Writing (BFA)
- Secondary Education (post baccalaureate)
- Certificate in Writing
- General Education
[edit] Master's of Public Accounting
MLC's Master's of Professional Accounting program was designed with a wide range of students in mind. From high school juniors all the way up to working accountants, the MPA has something to offer all.
High school students can earn their Bachelor's Degree and their Master's Degree in accounting in just 4 1/2 years. An additional 6 month investment can equip students with the advanced degree they need to advance in the accounting field.
Current students can earn their Master's in as little as 6 months, depending on their undergraduate work. This is possible because graduate level credit can be earned for undergraduate level courses the student will already be taking. By completing an additional graduate project, the student earns credit for his or her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the same time.
Those who already have a Bachelor's Degree in accounting can earn their Master's in as little as one year through Midland. Depending on their undergraduate courses, graduate students can get credit for classes they took as undergraduates... even at other schools. Similar to the undergradute practice, all the graduate student will have to do is complete a short, independent study graduate project to earn full credit for certain courses they took as undergrads.
The five, graduate-only courses are held in a style similar to the school's iMpact program. Meeting one day, every other weekend, the working accountant will find plenty of time for work, family, friends, and school study.
Finally, with the addition of a few electives, the Master's student will earn their degree and be able to sit for the Certified Public Accountant exam. While a CPA will allow an accountant to advance, CPAs with a Master's as well will advance further, faster.
