Midland Junction Municipality

The Municipality of Helena Vale was proclaimed on November 8, 1895 as the local government authority for the rapidly growing town of Helena Vale in Western Australia. The name 'Helena Vale' was chosen because of its closeness to the Helena River.

[edit] Overview
The first meeting of the newly elected Municipality of Helena Vale was held at the goods shed of the Midland Railway Company on December 18, 1895. Edwin Halpin was sworn in as the first Mayor of Helena Vale along with Councillors Alfred Eggleston, Thomas Norman, William Smiley, Alexander Watt, Francis Honey and William Brown.
In 1901, six years after the Municipality's establishment, the name of Midland Junction was declared and changed for the town and the municipality.
By June 1961, the Municipality of Midland Junction decided to drop 'Junction' from the town's name. The municipality became the Town of Midland and this name survived right up till 1970 when the Council was forced by the State Government to merge with the Shire of Swan-Guildford to form a new council that would operate effectively and economically for the area. Today, the area that was apart of the Town of Midland is now under the City of Swan.
