The Middlesbrough Bears were a Speedway team which operated under various names from 1939 until their closure in 1996. [1]

[edit] Brief history
Initially nicknamed the Bears in 1939. The team operated from 1946 until 1948 and won the Northern League in 1946 and Division Two in 1947. The promotion moved to Newcastle after the 1948 season closed. The Bears nickname was again used when the track re-opened in 1961 intil it closed again at the end of the 1966 season.
The track opened again in 1968 but were nicknamed the Teesiders until 1972. In 1973 they were again renamed, this time as the Tigers. This name was used until the end of the 1988 season. In 1989, the club reverted once again to the Bears until their permanent closure in 1996 when Cleveland Park was sold for development.

[edit] Redcar Bears
In 2006 a new track opened at nearby South Bank, Middlesbrough and entered the Premier League under the name Redcar Bears.
