[edit] Purpose

The goal of the institute is to foster a national movement to: place secession on the national political agenda, encourage secessionist and separatist movements here and abroad, develop communication among such existing and future groups, create a body of scholarship to examine and promote the ideas of separatism, and work carefully and thoughtfully for the ultimate task, the peaceful dissolution of the American empire.

[edit] Beliefs

The Middlebury Institute is one of various secession based political organizations. In the Middlebury Declaration of 2004, the organization recognizes the growth of the militarily based 'American Empire' and places its goals in self-determination movements around the world, defining separatism as decentralization, dissolution, disunion, division, devolution, or secession. The Declaration states that justice and participatory democracy is only possible at the small scale. It maintains a registry of North American separatist groups, primarily lobbying for the secession of individual states from the United States or Canada.

[edit] History

The Middlebury Institute was founded in 2005 by a group of citizens and organizations sharing similar beliefs about secession and separatism.
