Charles Kearns Deane Tanner died in office and was succeeded by Daniel Desmond Sheehan (Irish Parliamentary Party) at a constituency by-election on 17 May 1901.
After the General Election in January 1910, Sheehan was expelled from the IPP and, in protest and to re-emphasize his support, he resigned the seat and re-stood as an Independent (Labour) in the constituency by-election.
