Mid-Continent Public Library is a political subdivision of the state of Missouri. It is a consolidated library district, originally founded in 1965, and now consists of 30 branches in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and suburbs including Liberty, Missouri and Gladstone, Missouri. Separate from the Kansas City Public Library district, it overlaps slightly with them, as both districts maintain branches in Independence, Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, etc.
The district has some thirty libraries across Clay, Platte, and Jackson counties which hold some 8,320,986 circulated items and have sponsored Summer Reading Programs completed by 62,341 people, more than any similar program.[citation needed] The library is host to a genealogical library near its North Independence branch. That branch is also its largest, with an average collection size of 315,000 items as of July 2006.[1] The library subscribes to 227 databases [2]which are available at all branch locations. In addition, 207 of these resources are available remotely with an MCPL card, including membership in WorldCat, allowing for holds to be placed outside of the district.
