Talk:Michel de l'Hôpital
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've put a fair amount of effort into this; I'd like to know what the experts think!
Also, are these correct translations?
chambre des comptes = treasury
Le but de la Guerre et de la Paix, au Discours pour exhorter Charles IX à donner la paix à ses sujets (roughly, "The goal of war and peace: a Speech asking Charles IX to give peace to his subjects")

- I've made a couple of minor tweaks - au should have been ou (or). The translations look fine to me, though I'm not a real expert! Enchanter
Any relation of Guillaume François Antoine, Marquis de L'Hôpital, after whom L'Hopital's rule is named? I looked up some stuff about his family once, but I can't really remember what it said... -- Oliver P. 02:28 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)
- Sorry, Oliver, I couldn't find an answer to that in a brief period of Googling -- you'll have to ask a real historian.
- Michel lived c.1505 - 1573 and died near Etampes in Essonne in NE France
- Guillaume lived 1661-1704, and spent most of his life in Paris
- If I find more, I'll be sure to add a link. -- Catherine 03:31 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

- Oh, thanks for looking! I had a brief Google myself, but wasn't really expecting to find anything. The source I used to look up the mathematician's family was a very old French-language genealogical reference work which I found in a university library once, so I don't suppose many people would have easy access to it. I'll check it again one day... -- Oliver P. 10:36 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)
