[edit] Multilingual User Interface

Office Language Packs enable users to change the language for menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, and other user interface elements for all the Microsoft Office programs installed on the PC. It’s like having multiple versions of Office on your desktop—one in the initially installed language and one or more other languages, additionally installed through Language Packs. When choosing a language, this is used for all installed Office programs, and the programs remain in that language until is change to a different language. This feature is designed to help boost user’s productivity, especially when working in a language different from the version of Office installed initially on the PC, or when the preference to interact with Office in one language while creating documents in another.

As a demonstration of how changing the language setting for the user interface will affect the appearance of your Microsoft Office programs, here is the Insert Tab of the Ribbon in Microsoft Excel 2007, as modified by various Office Language Packs.

[edit] Multilingual Help, Templates, and More

Help is supported both within Office and, if connected to the Internet, via Office Online in different language. Localized Office websites provide access to a continuously evolving collection of Help articles, feature demos, training courses, tips and tricks, and a huge collection of document templates for work, home, school, and recreation. The Help language can be set independently of the user interface language.

[edit] Proofing and Editing Tools for Multilingual Document Creation

Office Language Packs support a wide range of document proofing tools, including Spelling and Grammar, Thesaurus, Translation Screen Tips, Word Count, Auto Correction, and Input Method Editor utilities for East Asian languages. The user interface and proofing language are independent of one another, so they can be customized independently.

Auto Correction uses language dictionaries to automatically detect and correct typographical errors, misspelled words, and incorrect capitalization. For enhanced spelling correction, Auto Correct can not only use words from Microsoft Office’s built‐in dictionaries, but also words you add yourself.

The Thesaurus provides alternative words in the selected language.

Translation Screen Tips provide quick translations or definitions when pausing the mouse cursor over a word.

Word Count is an essential utility when you have character or word count requirements when creating documents.

Language packs for East Asian languages include Input Method Editors (IMEs) that allow users to input complex characters and symbols, such as Chinese characters, using a standard keyboard. IMEs offer a variety of methods for selecting and inserting these characters, including phonetically, by character stroke count, or by drawing the character with a mouse or tablet PC stylus.

Each Language Pack contains its primary language for user interface and Help, as well as at least one additional language or language variation for proofing and editing tools. Since languages have their own unique characteristics, available proofing tools may differ, depending on the Language Pack you select.
