Microsoft Office Communicator is an integrated enterprise Unified communications client, enabling information workers to communicate in real time through the use of instant messaging (IM), voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and videoconferencing. Unlike Microsoft Office Outlook, its email counterpart, Office Communicator cannot be used as a standalone application but requires Microsoft Office Communications Server in order to be used. Communicator replaces Windows Messenger in corporate environments.
The current version is Office Communicator 2007. It was released to manufacturing (RTM) on 28th July, 2007 [1] and launched in October 2007. Office Communicator 2007 is an Innovative Communications Alliance (ICA) product.
Office Communicator was launched in Q2 2005 as Office Communicator 2005.

[edit] Features
Office Communicator features real time communications facilities including IM, VoIP and even video conferencing, as well as online presence capabilities, by featuring a contact list, as well as integrating with other presence directories and online calendars. The latest release integrates with other Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook calendars to update the presence information based on schedules marked in the calendar; or when working on a document, it can automatically show other people who are online and working on the same document.[2]
[edit] Disadvantages
Office Communicator uses a proprietary instant messaging protocol. It may not be usable with non-Microsoft instant messaging clients.[3]
