Micki Free

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Micki Free is a professional musician, known for his guitar playing and singing. He was discovered by Gene Simmons of the Super Group KISS. Free is a Comanche and Cherokee mixed blood Native American. Micki Free is a Three Time Grammy nominee, Grammy Winner and 5 time Native American Music Award Winner. After a long and fruitful career, Micki still writes and tours with his band "The Micki Free Electric Blues Experience", with Jon Brant (formerly of Cheap Trick) on bass, Curly Smith (formerly of Boston) on drums, and Terry Manning on keyboards. Free is also distinguished as The Director of Promotions & Special Events for The Seminole Tribe of Florida, owners of Hard Rock International.

He is best remembered as being a guitarist in the band Shalamar and being compared to Prince.

His manner of dress and appearance during the late 80's was parodied in the (Dave) Chappelle's Show sketch Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories: Prince, a style he exhibited years before Prince began to adopt the same style.

Micki Free is also the co-founder of the AOR band Crown of Thorns with Jean Beauvoir (of The Plasmatics).
