Malone was first noted as a good hurler in the mid-1960s with the Cork minor team. He first tasted success in 1967, winning a Munster minor medal which was quickly followed by an All-Ireland minor medal. He won a second Munster medal at minor level in 1968. That same year Malone won a Munster medal with the Cork under-21 team as a substitute. In spite of the county going on to win the All-Ireland Malone played no part in the final victory. He won another provincial under-21 title in 1969, however, once again he played no part in Cork’s All-Ireland victory. Malone added a third Munster under-21 medal to his collection in 1970, however, Cork drew the subsequent All-Ireland final. He was dropped for the replay of the game which Cork won. 1971 saw Malone win a fourth consecutive Munster under-21 title. He finally collected an All-Ireland under-21 medal later that same year.

The following year Malone joined the Cork senior inter-county hurling team. He began the year by collecting a National Hurling League medal. Malone later won his first senior Munster medal with Cork, however, his side were beaten by Kilkenny in a thrilling All-Ireland final. Two years later in 1974 Cork bounced back with Malone collecting a second National League title. He failed to secure a permanent place on the team for the championship over the next few years, however, in 1976 he reclaimed his place and won his second Munster title. Cork later defeated Wexford in the championship decider, giving Malone his first senior All-Ireland medal. His hurling prowess also earned him an All-Star award. Malone won a third Munster title in 1977, before going on to win a second All-Ireland medal following another defeat of Wexford. In 1978 he claimed a fourth Munster medal, however, Malone missed the All-Ireland final victory over Kilkenny. He left inter-county hurling shortly afterwards.
