Mick Bates (born Loughborough September 24, 1947) is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician, and has been Member of the Welsh Assembly for Montgomeryshire since 1999. He was previously a Powys County Councillor.

Science Teacher (Humphrey Perkins Jn. High School, Barrow in Soar; Belvidere Secondary School, Shrewsbury) 1970-75. Head of Gen. Science, The Grove School, Market Drayton, 1975-77. Farmer since 1977. Chairman, Llanfair Caereinion Branch National Farmers Union (NFU) 1983-85. Chairman County Livestock Committee 1988-1991. Instigated/chaired NFU County Public Affairs Committee since 1990. NFU County Chairman 1991. Produced and presented Radio Maldwyn farming programme 1994-5. NFU elected delegate 1995. Started a farmers programme on local radio and a scheme for students to visit farms.

Agriculture, rural communities, community regeneration and the voluntary sector. Represented and campaigned for farmers locally and nationally.

As a Liberal Democrat County Councillor Mick has instigated a successful community regeneration scheme which obtained Market Towns Initiative status.
