Michelle Miller (née Randall) is a fictional character on the new telenovela (English soap opera), Fashion House. She is played by actress Natalie Martinez.
[edit] Budding designer and Maria's main competition
Michelle Randall had always wanted to be her own person. She was a high school graduate, and despite dropping out of design school, was very talented as a fashion designer. She and handsome, but manipulative, Lance Miller, a CPA, who owned his own firm, had fallen in love in high school, and the two were happily married for eight years.
However, the luster had since worn off, because Lance had wanted Michelle to give up her dreams of designing and just be his loving homemaker wife. When that didn't happen, he was proven to be anything but faithful, considering that someone had sent Michelle pictures of Lance sleeping with his assistant, Gloria Thompson, a single mother.
Michelle confronted him on this, and then left him. She moved in with her best friend, Nikki Clark, a model at the House of Gianni, a fashion house in Los Angeles.
Lance, who still loved Michelle, was reluctant to divorce her, but had become more than possessive to her. He refused to consider her as an equal, thinking that she should only be his housewife, and not a designer, as she wanted to be. However, once he knew that it was over, he signed the divorce request, after forging her signature on a phony pre-nuptial agreement, which cheated her out of everything.
She became a junior assistant to Gianni designers, Harold and Hans, who took to Michelle immediately, becoming her closest friends (both Harold and Hans were gay). Usually, she and Nikki hung out with Harold and Hans who hovered over Michelle like two mother hens.
While at a club with Nikki, she met handsome Luke Gianni, the son of Maria, the owner of House of Gianni. He had been in a relationship with self-destructive and selfish model, Tania Ford, much like her one-sided and very selfish relationship with Lance.
The two clicked almost immediately, and they fell in love, to the jealous Tania's dismay. However, Maria, who loathed the idea that Luke and Michelle were in love, aimed to derail the romance before it even began. Also, the jealous Maria was prone to steal much of Michelle's designs and pass them off as her own.
Michelle had received a job offer for a rival fashion house, but Maria, aided and abetted by equally scheming cohort John Cotter, torpedoed that offer by lying about Michelle, saying that she was unstable and crazy.
Maria was afraid that if Michelle was lured away from House of Gianni, she would overtake her in prestige, and also she would lose all those wonderful designs that she could steal any time she wanted to.
During a dinner that Maria had with Luke, her then-fiance, William Chandler; and her assistant, Lexi Walker, she spiked Luke's drink with rohypnol, commonly known as the Date-Rape drug, then sent Michelle and John to New York, hoping to divide and conquer.
She nearly succeeded, because Michelle caught Luke in bed with Lexi. However, Lexi, who was against Maria's scheme outright, and had more moral integrity than her vexing boss realized, tried to explain to Michelle what happened numerous times, and she finally heard it and believed her.
When she told Luke, who, due to the drug, didn't remember anything that had happened to him, that his version was the truth, he still defended his mother, and asked Michelle to leave. However, things went back to normal between them, and Luke was firmly on her side against his mother.
She has also discovered that Maria has been stealing her designs, (though she had suspected it right from the start) most especially her design for a wedding dress; although Maria manipulated her to believe that she and Michelle are alike in many ways. Later on, Maria would rue those words, when she discovered that she and Michelle were more alike than she realized.
Michelle headed the "Face of Gianni" competition, which was the most responsibility she received.
Despite being in charge, however, she had to contend with the overbearing new senior designer, John, who had been basically pulling rank on her, Hans and Harold, not to mention the ever annoying Maria (Michelle, however, had no idea that John was only senior designer because he had blackmailed Maria to do so to prevent Luke from finding out that his mother was the one behind drugging him, and ruining his relationship with Michelle).
She also had to contend with self-centered and arrogant Tania, who hated both Michelle and Nikki, for various reasons. Also, Gloria had asked Eddie Zarouvian, her boss and father of her son, to kill Michelle so that Lance could become hers and nobody else's. She hoped to accomplish this by lying about Michelle attacking her son.
However, due to the death of her mother, Doris, Gloria had second thoughts about killing her. The hit almost went off, but was botched when Gloria's son Alec was shot, instead of Michelle.
The terrible situation bonded Michelle and Gloria; and Michelle found herself being thankful to Gloria for getting her out of a very bad relationship with Lance.
After almost seeing her son die, Michelle saw Gloria as not the woman who wrecked her marriage, but a woman who was very decent indeed. They ended up friends in spite of what happened.
However, she also caught the eye of Maria'a arch-enemy, Sophia Blakely, who liked the designs that she had created, and acknowledged that she definitely had talent, something Maria never done.
Once Maria was out of the way, Sophia vowed to make sure Michelle is given her due—which is a pointed reference that she would make Michelle the senior designer, because she was good and had the talent to do so. Sophia had been the one, along with William, who had procured Michelle the job at the rival design house.
During the final news conference at the Charity fashion show, where Maria had said that all the designs worn were Maria Gianni originals, a brave Michelle walked up to the podium, interrupting the news conference, and stunned the crowd, by declaring that Maria Gianni was a liar—calling her out for her brazen thefts of her designs, and set the stage for a battle between the two—which also allowed Michelle to finally take the credit long overdue her for her designs.
She then bravely quit Gianni, and set up her own design business.
Michelle gained the financial support of William and Sophia, and then Nikki was fired from Gianni. (because of a so-called breach of morals, in reality, it was done out of sheer spite).
In fact, William helped her gain office space which she needed; and also gained a valuable ally in Lexi. Thanks to Lexi stealing files from Maria's computer and giving them to Michelle saved on a disk.
Maria recently schemed with Giuliana, a reporter friend of hers, who did a news story that was deliberately skewered to make Michelle look like a fool. While everyone else who watched was hurting for Michelle, Maria was of course pleased. Still, Lance intended on winning Michelle back.
Gloria finally realized that she couldn't ever get Lance, and was working full-time taking care of her injured son. She eventually fell in love with the surgeon who was treating Alec, and she gained a new job as a Medical Assistant.
Despite a setback with Luke, which included an unflattering painting that angered both her and Maria, Michelle aimed to be a success in the fashion industry, flying in the face of such troublesome people such as her ex-husband and her ex-boss. Luke and Michelle rehashed their relationship and the two finally realized that there were the good moments too, for all of the bad moments.
Lexi realized wisely that Luke could prove to be a distraction, and after reassuring Michelle that Luke will still be around after the show, she focused hard and got ready for her first ever unveiling of her new line of fashions.
However, Michelle had discovered that someone faxed her designs to the press and they savaged them. With William and Lexi's help, they discovered that Lance, egged on by Maria, had done the dirty deed. Maria's crooked reporter friend, Giuliana, was the one who savaged Michelle's work.
This has angered Michelle and Lexi, and whilst Lexi dealt with Maria, she dealt with Lance. During a drink at a bar, Michelle found out Lance's part in the scheme, angrily threw a drink in his face, denounced him, and told him that he had not changed, that he was the same arrogant person she left, and stormed out of the bar. After leaving the bar, she finally felt liberated.
To get even with their tormentors, Lexi and Michelle have decided to sabotage Maria's "Face of Gianni" photo shoot. While Michelle had some reservations, she eventually agreed with Lexi's reasoning that Maria Gianni needed to be stopped, at whatever cost. She extended an invite to her fashion show to Luke, and also his artist representative friend, Amanda.
The show was an unqualified success, and Michelle Miller Designs, not to mention, Michelle and Lexi, were the stars of the evening. Despite the setback with William's arrest, which in essence froze Michelle Miller Designs' assets, they forged on, believing that it is business as usual.
Little did Michelle realize that Lexi had been working behind the scenes with Maria, and connived with her to get 70% of Michelle's own company. Lexi was made CEO and Maria, with sickening glee, threw Michelle out of her former company.
This was the last straw for Michelle. As the sinister Maria rubbed in her latest victory in her enemy's face, she snapped and the two had a vicious cat fight in a fountain outside of Michelle's former company. The cat fight would have made Sophia proud.
It took Luke to pull the angry Michelle away from Maria. She also discovered that it was Maria who had pushed Nikki down the stairs in her apartment, which caused her to lose her baby. This only succeeded in making Michelle even angrier. The company was eventually changed to Lexi Walker Designs; with Lexi as arrogant and cruel as Maria had ever been, and worse.
After Maria's supposed death and Lance being killed in a hit-and-run car accident; Michelle was kidnapped by Eddie and his conniving mobster friends. They were desperate to get their hands on the evidence to his crimes that Lance had in his possession, and Michelle knew where it was hidden. The police had gotten there in time, thanks to the able help of her new friend, Gloria.
Although Eddie and his mobsters had the upper hand, at first, Michelle regained it quickly when she grabbed the gun that Lance had wisely left in the safe, and shot one of the mobsters. She also threw hydrogen peroxide solution in another's eyes; and then defeated him; which proved that she was a scrapper through and through.
After all the turmoil, Michelle left Los Angeles, where she had lived most of her life, and accompanied Luke to New York City to begin a new life together, after he sold House of Gianni. As a surprise, Harold and Hans, who had always believed in her, got Michelle's stolen designs back to her; and they sold the gowns that had been made already on eBay.
Presumably, they remained together and Michelle became a top fashion designer in New York, while Luke became a talented and successful artist. At last, Michelle Randall Miller received her due and a very happy ending.
