Michelle A. McManus is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. She has been a member of the Michigan Senate, representing the 35th District since 2003. She has served as assistant majority leader since January 2007. Previously she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1993 through 1998. Her uncle George McManus represented the Traverse City Area in the Michigan Senate from 1991-2003

McManus as of her re-election in 2006 serves as the chair of the Senate Campaign & Election Oversight Committee. She also serves as the chair of the Department of Natural Resources Subcommittee and the Joint Capital Outlay Committee, Vice-Chair of the Community Colleges Subcommittee and a member of the Higher Education Subcommittee which are subcommittees of the Senate Appropriations Committee. She also co-chairs on the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus which seeks to promote the outdoors by educating about conservation.

McManus introduced Senate Bill No. 395 during her second year as a member of the Michigan Senate, a bill known as the Legal Birth Definition Act, which would have made partial birth abortion illegal in the State of Michigan. After the bill's veto by Governor Jennifer Granholm, McManus joined with the Right to Life of Michigan, to overturn the veto. This resulted in the veto being overturned.
As a member in the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus she has sponsored bills the have created an apprentice hunting programs. She also was involved in a ban on internet hunting, which is a remote controlled version of hunting in which a person controls a gun over the internet with their mouse.[1]

She has lived for her entire life in Northern Michigan and attended Traverse City public schools. She graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.S. in Political Science.
McManus served as a State Representative for Michigan's 104th House District between 1992 and 1998.[2] In 1998, McManus ran for Congress against Rep. Bart Stupak in Michigan's First Congressional seat.[3] She served as the director of Governor John Engler's Northern Michigan Office between 1999 and 2002.[4]
She lives with her husband, Keith Nelson, and their two daughters in Lake Leelanau. Her oldest daughter, Jessica, is a sophomore at Ferris State University in the Public Administration program. She is an avid sportswoman who enjoys many different outdoor and community activities.
