From 1966 to 1982, he served in the Royal Anglian Regiment, becoming its Commanding Officer in 1985.[2] Between 1987 and 1989, he commanded 20 Armoured Brigade, between 1989 to 1991 he was Chief of Staff 1st (British) Corps and in 1991 and 1992 he commanded 2nd Infantry Division.[2]

In the following year he was General Officer Commanding of the Eastern District, and from 1992 to 1994 Assistant Chief of the General Staff.[2] In 1994, Walker was made Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in which capacity in 1995 and 1996 he was Commander of the Implementation Force in Bosnia. In 1997 he became Commander-in-Chief, Land Command[2] and Aide de Camp General to The Queen.[2]

He was Chief of the General Staff from 2000 to 2003 and Chief of the Defence Staff from 2003 to 2006.[2] As Chief of the Defence Staff he was quite critical of some of the media coverage of the Iraq War[3].
