Michael Tunn
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michael Tunn (born January 18, 1974) is an Australian radio announcer and television presenter. He was said to be youngest professional radio presenter in Australia at the time when he started at Australia's national youth station Triple J, in November 1990.
He is best known for hosting Triple J's evening request program The Request Fest (now called Super Request, hosted by Rosie Beaton). Michael hosted between 1992 and 1997, and was also the presenter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Children's TV program The Afternoon Show and a set of TV documentaries on youth body image during the early to mid 1990s.
Michael is wrongly credited with discovering Silverchair in some quarters, despite the fact he was the first to promote the group on Australian Radio on 'The Request Fest'. The response from the Triple J audience demanded heavy airplay and generated excitement. The demo became the most played track in the show's history. This is what resulted in a major record company bidding war, won by Sony Music.
After leaving Triple J in November 1999, he moved on to join the now defunct 'bigfatradio.com', an online radio station that used proprietary web page streaming technology so that the end user was able to view pages sent from the studio. The station featured many ex Triple J staff including Angela Catterns, Helen Razer, Ian Rogerson and Debbie Spillane
After the collapse of the venture in the Dot-Com bubble burst, he joined the Austereo network in January 2001 and became the Assistant Program Director and Afternoon Presenter of Triple M Adelaide and SAFM.
After five years with Austereo in March 2006, Michael was informed his contract had been terminated with no apparent explanation.
Michael was appointed Music Director at ABC Local Radio in the Northern Territory in 2006. He also is a regular writer on Radio for Crikey.
