Michael Stifel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Stifel (1487April 19, 1567) was a German mathematician. He discovered logarithms and invented an early form of logarithm tables decades before John Napier.

His most important work is "Arithmetica integra", published in 1544. It contains important innovations in mathematical notation. It has the first use of multiplication by juxtaposition (with no symbol between the terms) in Europe. He is the first to use the term "exponent".

Stifel attempted to use the Bible to predict the apocalypse. He predicted that Judgement Day would occur on October 19, 1533 at 8:00 AM. When this prediction failed, he did not make any other predictions.
