Michael Purdy

Michael Purdy (born in Sydney on September 14, 1954) is a retired Naval officer who served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1975 until 2001. During his career he served as the Commanding Officer of HMAS Balikpapan, HMAS Wewak, and HMAS Bunbury.

Michael Purdy is also a yachtsman and represented Australia in international yachting as the navigator of the yacht Magic Dragon in the 1977 world quarter ton titles. In 1979, aged 25, he skipperedthe Naval sail training yacht Nirimba in the Sydney Hobart Yacht race.

He was raised in Melbourne and was educated under the leadership of American Marianists at St.Paul's College and later, after graduation, at the University of Melbourne. Michael Purdy is also a graduate of the Naval Staff College, now the Australian Command & Staff College and the Mt Eliza Centre for Executive Education at the Melbourne Business School.

During the period 1999 to 2001 he served in the Australian Defence Force Headquarters within the Maritime Development Branch and produced papers that derived the user requirement and specifications for the Armidale class patrol boat. His papers "A Maritime Development Patrol Boat Study" and "Development of Australia’s Offshore Patrol Boat Programme" influenced a number of other papers on patrol boat operations. The latter paper was presented at the Ausmarine 2000 conference. In September 2001 he addressed the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (Australian Division) on the requirements for RAN’s New Patrol Vessels.

One publicly available paper that has been influenced by his work is Commander Sharon Daniels paper "Human Aspects of Alternative Crewing Strategies for Replacement Patrol Boats: A Psychological Study."

Michael Purdy is currently the Deputy Director - Navy Internet within the Royal Australian Navy.
