The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, originally the Federal University of Agriculture, is a federal university in Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria [1] established as a specialized University by a Federal Government of Nigeria Decree No 48 of November 1992. It began formal activities in May 1993 with the appointment of the first Council and Vice-Chancellor Professor Placid C. Njoku on 27th May 1993, while other key officials of the University were appointed later.

The first set of students were admitted into the institution during the 1993/94 academic year with a student population of 82.

The nickname "Umudykes" or U'dykers refers to students, alumni, and sports teams of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

The institution is located in the well known Agricultural Training and Research city of Umudike, about 10 kilometers from Umuahia (capital of Abia State). The major link road to the University is the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Federal Road, a direct route to the State capitals of Abia Akwa-Ibom and Cross River States.

Being close to Umuahia, the University is linked through a major North-South Express Road to most part of the country. It commenced its activities on the premises of the former Federal College of Agriculture, Umudike.

It currently offers more than 100 programs and grants more than 40 undergraduate degrees.[2] Post Graduate degrees are offered (M.Sc. and MBA ) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in over 15 departments, in 11 schools and colleges. In total, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture issues the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Agriculture (B.Agric)
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Master of Science (M.Sc)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

These degrees are offered across ten Colleges and a graduate school within the University. These include:

The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture competes in Nigerian University Football League (NUFOL). It also competes in the Nigeria National University games in Football (Soccer), Basketball, Tennis.

The Basketball team is called the Dykers by the University community.

The University is currently headed by Professor Ikenna Onyido, who became the university's 3rd Vice Chancellor in 2005.

The main administrative structure of the University is as specified by the University of Port Harcourt Degree No. 84 and as amended by the Universities Miscellaneous degree 11. The Principal Officers of the University are: the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar and the University Librarian.

The Council is the highest policy-making body which meets at least three times every year. It is the governing body of the university and has power under the University degree, to manage and adjudicate on matters regarding the administration and finances of the University except those not otherwise provided for by the University of Port Harcourt Decree. The Federal Government as specified by the University Decree appoints the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, the Vice-Chancellor and the outside members of the Council. The representatives of the University on the Council are elected from the Senate and Congregation.

The Senate is presided over by the Vice-Chancellor. The membership of Senate includes the Vice-Chancellor, the two Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the provost, College of Health Sciences, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and Directors of Institutes, all Professors, the University Librarian and members of academic staff elected by the Faculties of Congregation or those appointed by the Vice-Chancellor as specified in the University Act. It has the paramount responsibility of organizing and controlling the teaching of the University, the admission of students, the discipline of students, and of promoting research. It receives and decides on the recommendations and reports from the Boards of Faculties and all other academic units.
