Michael Ian Mancienne (born 8 January 1988 in Isleworth, England) is an English footballer playing for Chelsea. He is a composed centre-back by trade and went on the Chelsea first team pre-season tour of the United States in 2006. He has captained England at Under-18 Level.

[edit] Playing career

Mancienne was an unused substitute for Chelsea in the 2006 Community Shield match versus Liverpool and the first two FA Premier League games of the 2006–07 season against Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers.

For the 2006–07 season he moved into the England Under-19 Squad having decided he would rather play for England than his grandparent's native Seychelles.

A message on the official Queens Park Rangers website on 15 October 2006 stated that Mancienne would be joining the Championship club on a month's loan the following day. On 12 January 2007 the club's official website released a statement saying that Mancienne would remain at Rangers for the remainder of the season. On 20 July 2007 the club revealed that Mancienne would be returning for the whole of the 2007–08 season.[1]

Mancienne spent the majority of the 2006–07 season on loan at QPR where he wore the number 38 shirt. He played most of his 28 games for the Championship club at right back, but also played a few times in his preferred centre back position. His impressive displays made him popular with the QPR fans, who voted him runner-up in the Supporters' Young Player of the Year. For the 2007–08 season he wore the number six shirt.

He returned to Chelsea at the end of the 2007-08 season and looks likely to be given a chance in the first team.

[edit] Notes

  • Mancienne previously attended St Michael and St Martin's primary school, and then St. Marks RC Secondary School in Hounslow, Middlesex, London before joining Chelsea on a full time contract.
