Michael Gardiner (writer)

Michael Gardiner is a Scottish writer and academic, born in Irvine, Scotland in 1970.

He grew up in Ayr, Scotland, until going to Oxford University to study English. He pursued his postgraduate studies in contemporary cultural criticism and Scottish literature in London and St. Andrews, where he gained Ph.D. in 1999.

Since 1999 he has lived mainly in Tokyo, Japan, where he teaches English and Scottish literature at Chiba University while engaging in writing short stories and novels. His works include The Cultural Roots of British Devolution, Modern Scottish Culture, From Trocchi to Trainspotting, and a book of short stories Escalator. He was amongst the six finalists in The 2006 Scotsman and Orange Short Story Competition.
