Michael F. Moody (born 1932) was for many years the Chairman of the General Music Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1][2][3]
Moody was born in Richfield, Utah. As a young man he served as a Mormon missionary in the French East Mission.[4]
Moody was appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Church Music Department under coordinator Robert F. Cundick. This was a subdivision of the General Church Music Committee under O. Leslie Stone.[5] Moody became the chair of the Church Music Committee in 1977.[6]
In 1992, Moody was serving as president of the Woods Cross East Stake of the LDS Church in Salt Lake City.[7] Prior to this, he had been bishop of the Woods Cross 3rd Ward.[6]
Moody has written the music to several hymns including "This is the Christ",[8] "I Heard the Prophet Speak",[9] "This is Christmas",[10] "Let it Come Quietly",[11] "When Love Came Down",[12] "To Bethlehem",[13] and "He Sent His Son".[citation needed] The only of Moody's works in the 1985 LDS Church hymnal is "Testimony" (with words by Loren C. Dunn).
Moody served as president of the Haiti Port-au-Prince Mission of the church from 2000 to 2003.[14]
After serving as mission president, Moody returned to Salt Lake City where he resumed his duties as head of the church Music Committee. He retired from this position in 2005 and then went on a mission, along with his wife, to Jerusalem where he served as head of music at the Brigham Young University Center for Near Eastern Studies. By the time of his retirement, the church had hymnbooks of varying sizes published in 98 languages.[15]
