From: "David Tribble" To: "Michael Shermer" Subject: [skeptic] Wikipedia photo Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 11:17:25 -0600 I'd like to upload a promo photo of you (Michael) to Wikipedia, on the bio page they have for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Shermer However, I need "fair use" permission to do this, or explicit permission from the owner of the photo (which I assume is you). I've cropped the headshot in your latest newsletter (09/14/2006), http://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/06-09-14images/michael_shermer2.jpg but I can use a different image if you prefer. Thanks.
From: "Dr Michael Shermer" To: "David Tribble" Subject: Re: Fwd: [skeptic] Wikipedia photo Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 18:32:06 -0400 David, I own the copyright to that photo, and you have my permission to use it on Wikipedia. I have attached a couple of other photographs, including a couple from my bike racing days in case you wanted to include those as well. I also own the copyright to them. From: "David Tribble" To: "Michael Shermer" Subject: Re: Wikipedia, From Shermer Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 17:46:20 -0600 You are quite generous. I'm a bit new to the wiki process, so bear with me here. Apparently it's not enough to grant Wikipedia permission to use photos - you must also grant permission for downstream users of Wiki to use them as well, according to the GNU Open License. What I thought was a simple process is a bit more involved. Here's some of the legalese: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Example_requests_for_permission) We can only use your material if you are willing to grant permission for it to be used under terms of the GNU Free Documentation License. This means that although you retain the copyright and authorship of your own work, you are granting permission for all others (not just Wikipedia) to use, copy, and share your materials freely—and even potentially use them commercially—as long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely. You can read this license in full at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GFDL Please note that your contributions may not remain intact as submitted; this license, and the collaborative nature of our project, also entitles others to edit, alter, and update them at will, i.e., to keep up with new information, or suit the text to a different purpose. However, the license also expressly protects authors "from being considered responsible for modifications made by others" while ensuring that those authors get credit for their work. There is more information on our copyright policy at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights We choose the GNU FDL license because it is the best available tool for ensuring that our encyclopedia is and can remain free for all to use, and for providing credit to everyone who donates text and images. It may or may not be compatible with your goals in creating the materials available on your website -- that is your choice. Please be assured that if you do not grant permission, your materials will not be used at Wikipedia; we have a very strict policy against copyright violations. More also at: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Publicity_photos) Take a little time to understand what I'm asking for, and reply with a simple yes or no. I expect that you won't have any problems with granting permission. I need to find out a little more about using your bio text you sent me, though, since I would be uploading it under my user-ID. Since you gave me explicit permission to do that, I just need to find out if that's okay by Wiki rules, and how the text should be attributed. If it's not, I'll have to generate original text on my own, based on what you provided. Thanks for your time. -drt
From: "Dr Michael Shermer" To: "David Tribble" Subject: Re: Wikipedia, From Shermer Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2006 19:55:36 -0400 David, I understand. I grant you full and complete permission to publish the materials I sent you--photographs and text--under the GNU Open License agreement and Free Documentation License, and that I grant permission for all others to use, copy, and share these materials freely.
