Miami City Ballet was founded in 1986 as a Balanchine-style ballet companies by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Edward Villella as Artistic Director. Its repertoire is made up of the work of George Balanchine, Villella's mentor, though the company also performs in works by Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris and others.

Miami City Ballet serves as the resident company in major theaters in the Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and West Palm Beach areas, performing over 100 times annually. The company recently celebrated their 20th anniversary, and features a roster that boasts over 50 dancers from all over the world including Cuba, Venezuela, China, Switzerland, France, Japan, and Germany.
