Miami State High School

Miami State High School is located in the suburb of Miami in the city of Gold Coast, Australia. Miami High was officially opened in April, 1963, and was the first such school built on the Gold Coast between Southport and the NSW border. It is situated on the highway between Nobby’s Beach and Burleigh Heads. The current principal is Mr James Baker and attendance at the school has reached 870 with over 50 staff members. Miami High has also introduced an international exchange program with students from all over the world now attending the school. With the sudden increase in population on the Gold Coast, Miami High expect; and are on track with their target enrolment figures of 900 to 950 students.
Miami High boasts a student attendance rate of 91%, with the school opinion survey showing higher levels of satisfaction compared to "like schools" in many of the social climate items. The School Opinion Survey on data regarding school community relations indicates higher school means compared to "like schools".
Expenditure on teacher participation in professional development for the year 2006 reached a total of $24530. Permanent and temporary staff at the school had an attendance rate of 96% for the same year. The retention rate of staff from 2005 to 2006 was 95%. Student retention rates from year 8 to year 12 was 75%.

The school has achieved a significant increase in the number of OP 1-15 from 54% in 2005 to 67.7% in 2006. The school has achieved an increase in the number of QTAC applicants receiving an offer from 94% in 2005 to 98% in 2006. Curriculum offering remain diverse despite being a small school.

Social sports, Dance excellence, Duke of Edinborough, Debating, Computers, Public Speaking and Camps are all currently offered at Miami State High School.
The school has implemented various policies; most notably the attendance policy which restricts students to 15 "unauthorised" days absent a year; however additional days are allowed due to religious reasons, Queensland Secondary School Sport representation including state or commonwealth representation, any cultural activity organised by the school and off campus school activities. "Approved" absence can only be obtained with the presentation of a medical certificate.
