Mia (ミア?) is a character in the .hack universe, and appears in the .hack//Games for the PlayStation 2. In The World she appears as a blademaster with a hacked data file, giving her the appearance of an anthropomorphic cat with purple fur and long rabbit-like ears. Mia is often seen with a wavemaster named Elk, and is constantly on the look out for an item called "Aromatic Grass". She can be called to Kite's side early in the game, but as the game progresses, she becomes harder and harder to summon; by the third game, .hack//Outbreak, she is completely unavailable. Aside from her odd appearance, Mia is unusual in that she is the only character that can see the Twilight Bracelet.

[edit] Story

Mia is the reincarnation of the character "Macha" (pronounced as "Maha" - the German "ch" creates a rough "h" noise) from .hack//Sign. Macha was an AI character, which looked like a cat, and was created by Morganna to follow Tsukasa to make sure he never leaves the game;[1] but eventually turns on Morganna and sacrifices herself to save Tsukasa and the others.[2] Macha is also one of The Eight Phases of The Cursed Wave that Morganna sends after Aura, "Macha the Temptress".[3] When Macha was destroyed by being data drained, Mia was formed with none of Macha's memories, or knowledge that she is the sixth phase.

As the game progresses, and the server problems get worse, Mia is affected by the system failures; she acts strangely, as if she were drunk or drugged. Eventually, she is unable to control herself, and awakens as Macha the Temptress to challenge Kite in .hack//Quarantine. As with all the other phases, she is destroyed, so that Kite can continue his quest to revive Aura, and stop the viral infection of The World.

After the final phase Corbenik is defeated, Aura sends Kite and Elk a message to visit a particular dungeon, where a cat-like creature is found. Inside the dungeon, they find ghostly images of Macha, leading them on; and at the bottom of the dungeon, they find Macha imprisoned inside the Temptress Lover. When Kite and Elk defeat the Temptress Lover, Macha is released, and her form degrades back to Mia, but all her memories to when she first met Kite are erased; Elk wants to help her, and Kite tells them that Mia will be fine since she has Elk at her side. At this point, Mia can be summoned again.

[edit] Aromatic Grass

Aromatic Grass — called foxtail grass in the Japanese version — is an unusual item, and Mia has a desire for it. Because of her attraction to the item, and the strange behaviour she exhibits later in the game, some suggest that Aromatic Grass is a reference to cannabis; however, the Aromatic Grass and Mia's drunken behaviour are unrelated, although it may have a relation between her cat form and Cat Nip. In .hack//Sign, Tsukasa gave Macha some Aromatic Grass as a present, and as Mia it subconsciously reminds her of Tsukasa, so Mia instinctively seeks it; while her behavior is caused by the system crashes, as she is a computer AI program and not a real person, the failures have been corrupting her as well.

In Unison, Tsukasa and Mia finally meet each other. Tsukasa still sees Macha in Mia (even through the appearance change and the fact that Mia can talk) and does not listen when Mia tries to explain that she isn't Macha. Tsukasa cuts across, giving her some Aromatic Grass. Mia takes it and starts to cry. She asks why, even though she does not know Tsukasa, she cannot stop crying. Tsukasa gives her a hug, saying that it's alright. It is, of course, Macha who is crying with joy at seeing Tsukasa again.

[edit] GU and Beyond

As revealed from the Terminal Disc, Mia was apparently destroyed after the Project GU staff removed the Temptress data from her.[4] However Mia is apparently reborn in GU through the cat belonging to Elk/Endrance, but is really an AIDA.
