MIAKA

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MIAKA, or Men Interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha is a predominately black auxiliary group. As typical with auxiliary groups, their supposed purpose is to support a member organization of the National Pan-Hellenic Council in their service endeavors. MIAKAs, Alpha Angels, Kappa Sweethearts, Omega Pearls, Delta Beuax, Sigma Doves, Zeta Knights, and Sigma Gamma Rhomeos constitute the eight unofficial historically black auxiliary groups to AKA, AΦA, KAΨ, ΩΦΨ, ΔΣΘ, ΦΒΣ, ΖΦΒ, and ΣΓΡ respectively.

In 1990, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, officially disbanded any affiliation with auxiliary groups, but these groups still operate unofficially, as unincorporated bodies. The only exception being the "Iota Sweethearts" as they operate officially under Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.

Although the traditional purpose of auxiliary groups is to support another organization, they have recently gone under fire due to reports of underground factions whose members imitate the traditions and rituals of their unofficial parent organizations; in appearance, mannerism, and new member presentation. Because MIAKAs are not recognized, or sanctioned by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. any unlawful use of trademarks or symbols is strictly prohibited and a gross violation of applicable laws. Each of the NPHC organizations reserve all official trademarks, symbols and rituals for actual initiates to the organization.
