MH-1A

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MH-1A was a nuclear power reactor and the first floating nuclear power station.

Mounted on the Sturgis, a converted liberty ship formerly known as SS Charles H. Cugle, it was part of the US Army Nuclear Power Program and supplied 10 MW (13,000 hp) electricity plus fresh water to the Panama Canal Zone from 1968 to 1975.

The Sturgis was liberty ship hull number 3145, and not as sometimes supposed SS William Sturgis, another liberty ship which was hull number 800 and was scrapped in 1969. See list of Liberty ships.

The Sturgis is now moored in the James River outside Fort Eustis, VA and is part of the James River Reserve Fleet
