Mexican pizza is a pizza-like dish made with ingredients typical of Mexican cuisine. The Mexican pizza is not Mexican in origin, but is actually Tex-Mex cuisine and is usually associated with fast food restaurants such as Taco Bell.
[edit] Description
The base is usually a tortilla, made from either corn or flour; salsa or refried beans instead of the marinara sauce found on Italian pizzas; cheese, usually Cheddar or Monterey Jack; and toppings such as spiced beef or jalapeños. Mexican pizzas can also be made from quesadillas after tomato sauce and toppings have been added. These are often refered to as 'pizzadillas'.
Sometimes people can "Mexicanize" a pizza by simply making a traditional pizza, and adding Mexican toppings on top such as Mexican cheeses, lettuce, fresh tomatoes, taco sauce etc just before serving.
