Semi-protection of 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict

Hi Mets501, I noticed that you semi-protected 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict at 02:34 UTC and then removed it one minute later. This article, which is probably one of the most read right now, was semi-protected for several weeks, which enabled the registered users to largely reach a consensus and create a pretty good article. However, on 11 August the semi-protection was lifted by Cowman109 with the motivations "as it is a current event to allow casual editors to add to the article" and "Unprotected after four days as it's a current event". I can't see the logic of making the most hotly debated issues accessible for anon vandals because they want to play around, while the fairly anonymous news portal is permanently locked for everyone except administrators. Anyway, immediately after that semi-protection was lifted, the vandals moved in and the responsible editors are constantly busy reverting their insertions. It's bad enough trying to sort out the mess caused by a few very POV users who registered only three-four days ago. So, could you possibly reconsider and slap the semi-protection on for 3-4 days again? Thanks Thomas Blomberg 19:41, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I made a new section on ANI about this user. It looks like we both edited AIV at the same time, so my edit summary saying that I personally wouldn't block a longtime editor in good standing was lost. Syrthiss 12:50, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Yo dude, what particular policy am I in violation of? --Tess Tickle 01:28, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
So, would it be correct to say that you have edited my talk page without any reference to any wikipeadia policy which would permit you to do so? My user talk page is not an encyclopeadia article you know, and, as you probably know, no editing of user talk pages is permitted under Wikipeadia policy. --Tess Tickle 01:39, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
No thanks. I'd rather that you acted in accordance with Wikipeadia policy, as decided upon by the majority of users. I will be quicker to simply act upon the information which you deleted to set up another account. I'm sorry that you, and the other members of the wikipeadia cabal, feel it neccessary to act in complete violation of wikipeadia policies. Listing an admin at the Incident Noticeboard only serves to encourage other members of the cabal to crawl out of the wood-work in support of the said perpetrator, so that the favour may be returned in future. I expect we shall encounter each other soon enough.--Tess Tickle 01:53, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Block of User:Shockwsa

Hi, I got an edit conflict when trying to comment on that, and since you seem to have already blocked him I'm leaving it here. His edits aren't really false (read the rest of the article or do a google news search), they're just strongly worded, POV pushy and partly original research. I don't think it's a case of blatant vandalism though, but if you feel differently, just let the block stand. - Bobet 15:11, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

New SubCatagory or leave alone?

Just wanted your input really quick on this. I have been editing and caretaking the Notable YouTube users article however the more I think about it, the more I believe it should probably be a catagory instead of a page. All the people listed are notable for their fame derived from youtube, and the page is really only there for people who have articles on Wikipedia already, so right now there really isn't a difference between this and a subcatagory under the parent YouTube catagory. Obviously the users are notable or they wouldn't have a Wikipedia article...so the page is fairly pointless as I view it now. What do you think? I have reviewed all the catagory FAQ and articles but am still confused on how to create a subcatagory to link these user pages together...and how do I remove the 'notable' page once the subcatagory is made? Very confused. Sorry to take up your time --Brian (How am I doing?) 18:16, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I didn't know if you would get my response off my talk page but, I really apprecate it if you would make the subcatagory for me, as I don't feel comfortable doing it myself. I'll AfD the page after it is made, per Isotopes' suggestion. Thanks guys, you are making this really painless :) --Brian (How am I doing?) 18:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I swear this is the last thing I will bug you with today.

Mets, I really appreciate the help with the Catagory earlier and I know you are probaby getting sick of talking to me but a few quick things I could use your help with.

Here[1] is a redirect discussion that pretty much was ended by this conversion. Since you are an admin, perhaps there is a way to close it?

I also have a Request for Comment/mediation for the YouTube article but am still waiting for an admin to reply. Talk:YouTube#Request_for_Comment:_Section_with_information_on_how_to_download_videos_from_YouTube I don't know how admins handle it but I wanted to end this before tempers became too heated and an edit war continued. I followed the process but still am waiting for a response. --Brian (How am I doing?) 19:22, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Blocked, for no reason

Why the hell have you blocked me? I haven’t done anything wrong, I’m sorry but I think you’ve got the wrong person! I don’t appreciate being blocked for no real reason, just because I edit under a certain IP address, doesn’t mean I’m always guilty, if Wikipedia is going to continue to let people edit their pages, their going to have to something about the policy!!! 202.6.138.35 07:18, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

You just semi-protected the Marked Cards page against vandalism, right? If you took your time to read the recent edits you would have seen that I was just removing blatant self-promotion and spam. Expertmagician who is listing so-called Ultra Luminous marked cards and Juice Dust is not really making a contribution. Those are not real card-marking systems, by any stretch of imagination. They are just brand names for his own products that he sells on his web site (and can only be purchased from him through his web site) http://marked-cards.com (and his web site is also listed, by him, as a link at the bottom of the Marked Cards page).

It is because of "contributors" like him that misinformation gets published on Wikipedia, and it is because of "editors" like yourself that this misinformation is allowed to stay on Wikipedia. You think you are doing the work a favor by playing cop and semi-protecting pages without really looking into what it is all about.

I have made a few attempts to remove this self promotion and spam from the Marked Cards page, but Expertmagician (who used to "contribute" anonymously under IP 69.117.150.243) keeps putting his spam back. I personally don't care if Wikipedia is full of misinformation. What do I care? It is not my site. I can think of better things to do with my time, than trying to edit some stupid pages on some dysfunctional site. How can a site like Wikipedia possibly have correct information when any schmuck with an internet connection can feel free to make a contribution?

Deletion of David Witt

Could you restore and nominate it for Wikipedia:Articles for Deletion. I don't think that was resolved yet. Hello32020 14:18, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Arkansas congressional districts speedy deletions

I noticed that you speedied this series of articles after I tagged them with {{tl:hangon}}. Here is the text of my comment on the talk page that I was not able to post due to your deletion:

As a part of WikiProject Congress, the project participants are constructing a compreshensive set of articles to cover all congressional districts in the US. The current activity involves standardizing and renaming all congressional district articles in a consistent manner and creating the appropriate redirects from the old articles. In some cases, the original article had not yet been created and so this new article is currently 'empty'. However, as a part of the WikiProject, all these articles will eventually be created.
As to the possibilty of setting up these 'empty articles' as redirects until they are created: due to the recent activity in mass renaming and moving articles within the project, a slew of double redirects have been created without properly being addressed--having them point to an article that is going to be renamed in the near future is just asking for trouble.
WikiProject Congress is methodically populating and improving all the articles within its scope (including this one) and therefore should not be deleted.

First, I really don't appreciate not having the oppportunity to give a reason prior to the deletion. Secondly, could you give me some information as to the salient points of the process that I apparently do not understand, given my reasoning stated above.

Thanks. --G1076 14:26, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

While I support standardization by a WikiProject, articles cannot be created in the main namespace until they are ready to have content. From the Criteria for Speedy Deletion
3. No content whatsoever. Any article consisting only of links elsewhere (including hyperlinks, category tags and "see also" sections), a rephrasing of the title, and/or attempts to correspond with the person or group named by its title. This does not include disambiguation pages.
You may want to create these pages in your user space, or maybe in the WikiProject subpages. If you do create them not in the main article space, make sure when tranferring them do NOT do cut and paste moves, instead use the "move" tag to preserve history. —Mets501 (talk) 14:35, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your detailed response to my second point. I appreciate the advice and I understand the basis for the deletion. However, to expand on my first point, had the warning in {{tl:hangon}} been heeded, we could have had this conversation, I could have remedied the articles, and the whole create article--delete article--recreate article process could have been avoided. Take care. --G1076 21:53, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Just a quick favor

I was just stopping in to see how you are doing and ask if you could take a look at an AfD discussion. I normally would never ask for an AfD to have a semiprotect on it however I think this one may. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/StereoKiller.

The reason is it turns out to be like a myspace knock-off and the users are flooding over here disrupting the discussion. I won't post the things they are saying just to keep your userpage clean. Thanks a million --Brian (How am I doing?) 14:46, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

sorry to bother you again, however reverting the vandalism is getting a bit hard and with more people pouring over from here where someone is asking people to vandalise and disrupt the afd, I really hope now that it can be protected --Brian (How am I doing?) 15:22, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

deleting Americart

Hi Mets501,

I see you deleted the entry I put in for Americart. But there are several other similar ones out there, such as X-Cart and Zen Cart. Also, there are plenty of other businesses which have entries on Wikipedia. Is there something I should do so that the entry doesn't get deleted?

Paul Arnott and copyright problems

Hi -

I had to revert one of this user's new pages today for copyvio problems - he copied Karen Carpenter's bio straight from the Internet Movie Database. I saw the long string of copyvio warnings and the 24hr block you gave him on 8/14, so I thought I'd let you know he's at it again. I also put a note at ANI so he'd get widespread notice this time, 'cause he certainly seems determined. Let me know if you have questions - Baseball,Baby! ballsstrikes 21:20, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Your Profile Page

I think your front page is just killer! I'm trying to spruce mines up, but as it is now...rather pithy. Is there a template that's available to users so that I might be able to create one like yours?

P.S. You guys are a shoo-in for the playoffs (no jinx meant, tough news about Martinez though...). Hope my A's will meet you in the Series! --Banpei 05:03, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Hehe try as I might, I can't seem to get the side bars to work, only the top one. I think I'm just gonna have to settle with the way it looks now. At least I got the top bar working! =) Thanks a bunch! =) --Banpei 08:08, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Emmalina

Mets, I don't know how to handle this so I thought I would ask your opinion. A person on YouTube whom I think of as a friend has had someone posting her personal information (home address, phone numbers, private pictures) on the Wikipedia page here. Emmalina. While a protect would be nice, the problem is that this is now in the cached history. I was wondering if there was a way to save her article on a sandbox, delete the 'real' one and then recreate it from the saved sandbox copy, erasing the history and protecting her information? --Brian (How am I doing?) 06:37, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

What happened on the Moon

I notice that you were the admin who protected Apollo moon landing hoax; could you perhaps do the same for What happened on the Moon? I suppose we could try just warning or blocking the IP address that is doing it, but I suspect the page will end up with the same sort of problems as the main hoax page. --Brianyoumans 20:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the reply. I have posted things on the talk page and asked for discussion, but I'm not getting anything more than insulting comments in the edit messages. I will proceed as you have suggested. --Brianyoumans 20:34, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Could you perhaps revert the article this time around? I'm not getting anywhere with this guy. --Brianyoumans 22:19, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Um... could you please restore the second paragraph again? I think I have come around to the opinion that the synopsis of the movie can stay, but I am trying to retain a firm statement at the top that the whole thing is not regarded as having scientific merit, with a pointer to Apollo moon landing hoax. See the article's talk page for amusements... --Brianyoumans 19:33, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Dear "admin", FYI, contrary to your suggestions, I have no intentions to make any arguments with the likes of individuals who had asked for your assistance in helping them to obliterate the validity of the document by posting their nonsense AND allowing them to keep it there without a good reason, while a legitimate edit was reverted by you without a timely explanation. I kindly request that no similar and/or relevant actions on your part are to be exercised, as such acts undermine credibility of your objectivity as an administrator.

                                                      Respectfully,

Thanks for the response, this user just continues to stalk and harrass me and I didn't want to post from my main username because this guy is watching my contribs and I knew I would face more personal attacks if I posted from my main username. Chavez bot

Glad you've decided to pick up the accents on Chavez, but that has permanently messed up all the references, since most of the newspaper articles and other references did not have accents :-) No way to fix it now, but please stop. This work has to be done manually. Sandy 19:15, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

whew, I just checked one, and I think it will be OK. For example, the article "Hugo Chávez Accused of Anti-Semitism" is referenced in Venezuelan-Israeli relations (it had no accent mark before). If I google on the new title, with the accent, Google still returns the article correctly. Seems like it will be OK, even though technically that means the article titles are incorrect in the references now? Sandy 19:28, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

I can't think of others right now, but I'll keep an eye open and let you know. I checked all the articles on my watchlist, and found one other messed up image (can't remember where), but more importantly, I didn't find any actual corrections needed, rather accents introduced to the refs, so I reverted those. It seems we're doing a pretty good job on the accents after all! Sandy 20:00, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

I added a note that all was OK now, and the bot is in good shape for the future. I was surprised, in the articles I checked, to find the accents in such good shape. Thanks for your hard work ! Sandy 20:24, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Great! Why don't you test it on the main Hugo Chavez article? (Sorry, no accent when I'm typing from the laptop)? Sandy 20:36, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Looks good! Sandy 21:11, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Bot trials

Normally bot trials are for a week, although the approver can specifiy explicit times or edit caps. If nothing was stated, it's pretty much open ended. Regarless of anythign else, without a bot flag being set you should never edit faster then 2-3edits/min, to prevent flooding of recent changes. Generaly you should not be editing large (1000's) ammounts of articles while in trials either. — xaosflux Talk 22:40, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Semi-protect on Freemasonry

Hi Mets501... You recently put a much needed semi-protection lock on Freemasonry. Unfortunately, it does not look like the lock actually worked. A new user was able to edit after you had supposedly protected the page. Could you check that and make sure that the page is indeed semi-protected? Thanks Blueboar 14:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

The account that made the edit was actually 16 days old - not considered a "new user" by the software (which sets the threshold at about 4 days) even though it was their first edit. It's definitely semi-protected though. :) --james(talk) 14:17, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Not quite Vandalism

I've been looking at User:132.205.93.88 - who seems to be going around doing some very confusing changes, removing PROD, adding PROD, adding inppropriate tags to articles being considered for deletion. I reverted a couple, but he just posted on my talk page, since I mistyped a warning tag. --Brat32 03:25, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the headsup. If I looked at AfD's more than a few days past freshness, I'd probably see they're all closed. Didn't think of it. I know some are relisted if there's not much discussion, but I didn't know if some slip through the cracks considering 100-200 per day. I knew about WP:AN but not WP:LOA, so thanks for that too! I posted this on the Admin notice board but not sure how long that will take. Anyway, just a heads up that Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Manatee meat, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ModTheSims2, and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bitweaver2 have all been open for seven days now while other AfDs around them have closed. They haven't been relisted for consenus or posted to in a while. Could an admin take a look and make a call (relist, no consenus, delete or keep)?
