Thank you

I just came over an image marked by your bot and then checked and found Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/MetsBot 11. I saw my request being archived from the bot request page earlier this night and thought all chance of getting my request fulfilled was gone. I just had to say thank you. This was great.

An idea for the bot. The images that has not bin confirmed to be in a category or article on commons may have bin added after the bot checked. Maybe the bot can check these images again after a period. And maybe it should list these images somewhere. Maybe at commons?

Again thank you for the great bot work. Rettetast 22:02, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

I am no image expert...(yet). I am still learning. I would believe it is easiest to check the templates, but there is a third option. It could check what license category the image is in. I'll believe the tags would be easier to compare though but but there are probably templates with different names. I don't know how to deal with them.
As for the PD-problem there is probably no legal issues if the images containes that information, but if it was the en-uploader who released the image to PD, I would imagine the upload log should be there so that it is possible to check the license in the future. If its a random image from the us government that the en-uploader found on the net its not necessary with the en-upload log. Rettetast 07:29, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
This image was tagged wrong. It is a PD-image, but the Commons page said GFDL. Rettetast 15:24, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
Also check this edit. Rettetast 18:57, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I just have to say one more time that this bot feature is great and has saved me a lot of time deleting images. There are almost no backlog left at Category:Images with the same name on Wikimedia Commons.
Some more ideas. Could the bot move the nowcommons template to the top of the image description page when reviewing the image. May save some time.
If the bot can't find the image on commons could it check if the ending is not capitalized. I have seen some images with .JPG at en: but .jpg at commons that the bot has. I have also noticed some images with .jpeg on :en which have bin changed to .jpg on commons.
These would just small fixes and there are no rush to get them implemented. Good luck on your SAT-test. Rettetast 21:54, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Bot question

Hiya, thanks for creating the bot, but I had a question. It keeps putting flags on Image:David Perry.jpg, an image that I've moved over to Commons, and would like to get deleted from Wikipedia now. I've tried fixing the image file to address whatever the bot's concerns on, but it's still not happy. Can you please advise what I can add to the Commons page, to get the bot messages to stop? Thanks, Elonka 17:17, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

user:Sumibot flooding WP

user:Sumibotis making articles on Indian villages (especially of the state AP) which have no notablity. Sad to see Wikipedia being flooded with so many unnotable articles on villages. The number of villages in India run in lakhs. You can't have an article on every village!

MetsBot flagging of Image:FlattenedRoundPills.jpg

I see your bot flagged Image:FlattenedRoundPills.jpg as possibly not meeting the requirements for deletion, but the source info on Commons looks OK to me. What gives? (Please respond by email or on my talk page, as I might miss responses here.) --Slashme 07:53, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi! I've seen you're pretty good at creating .svg-files. I was wondering if you could create something like this one, but without the clock and with something like this instead. I would be really happy if you could do that. I'm planning to use it with this template. --MrStalker talk 15:26, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot - and Sorry

Firstly, sorry for interrupting any prep for the exam you have tomorrow! Secondly, would you mind if I could have a look at the source code for MetsBot, in the interests of creating my own bot. I have no idea where to begin, but I'm trying to look at other bots code to get an idea. I appreciate any help you give. Thanks, Stwalkerster talk review 09:45, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

I believe there is no real special source code for MetsBot. User:MetsBot says "This bot runs on the pywikipedia framework for most tasks and AutoWikiBrowser for some." - The pywikipedia framework is freely avaliable [1] and AutoWikiBrowser resides here on WP - WP:AWB. The sources for which, are also avaliable. Reedy Boy 09:47, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Actually, a huge portion of my bot is in C# with the dotnetwikibot framework, which I've updated MetsBot's page to say. I'll email you the code tonight or later today. —METS501 (talk) 11:03, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot in regards to Commons Image Tagging

I just wanted to say how immensely helpful MetsBot has been in clearing out image backlogs for images that have been moved to the commons. I have *yet* to see it wrong on an image tag (unless it says X wasn't done, but it's been done since it was tagged), and it's so good, that if MetsBot says it's clear, I don't even question it, I just delete on sight. It's getting so good, that I almost thing you should have it run RFA and let it delete the images itself (although I know people think Adminbots are bad). Thanks again, ^demon[omg plz] 15:32, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks :-) I'd definitely have it run RFA but I think that people would be too paranoid to let it run as an admin. But that's OK :-) I recently added a feature so that MetsBot will recheck problem images two days after tagging to see if it the problems have been fixed, so that should help out too. —METS501 (talk) 15:38, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Sounds even better. The commons ones are the backlogs that aren't necessarily the largest, but do take a long time, just because they require so much checking. You've helped a great deal. Keep up the good work, and if you ever need anything done with templates, just let me know, as that's what ^demonBot2 is approved for. ^demon[omg plz] 15:40, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Talk about History of Automated Adaptive Instruction in Computer Applications

You raised a number of valid complaints on the initial version of this page, and we made changes in response to these complaints. How does it look now? Do you have suggestions for further changes? We are aware that the title is unpleasantly long, but the point is to distinguish this subfield of HCI from a broad, sprawling literature on adaptive instruction that has nothing to do with computer applications. Some of the present paragraphs are rather brief and do not well distinguish what was done in one project versus another, but I think that will solve itself as more people are informed of the existence of this page. -- IH

---

Thanks for your reply. Let me see what content it acquires as a couple of knowledgeable people contribute over the next few weeks (though I will caution them not to add too much since we don't want it to bloat). The non-encyclopedic flavor you mention may reflect the chronologically ordered entries. I just did that because it was an easy way to start, and will provoke experts to add more good information, because people like to set the record straight about who did what first. Once a bit more content and substance is in there, it may be possible and advantageous to reorganize it in a non-chronological fashion, which may help make it more encyclopedia-like.

But to be honest I think the entry on HCI would probably really sprawl if we put this topic in with it, especially since there would be a dozen other subtopic that are equally significant. However, I could imagine a broader entry on "User Interfaces, Adaptive" that might provide a natural home for this and also for other research that involves UIs that adapt to the user rather than trying to teach the user (for example, if you repeatedly hit the wrong command, the adaptive UI may say "would you like us to make a shortcut out of that?" --related to what is being reviewed here, but also different).

Anyway, thanks again for your help--I will keep an eye on this and try to keep it evolving in a useful direction in light of your comments. -- IH

User:UBX/

Hi, I originally prodded this page as it was probably created by mistake, kinda stupid, I should have come to you directly. Anyway, you should perhaps consider putting a redirection to User:UBX and protect the page to prevent more userboxes to be created there by someone not filling the form. -- lucasbfr talk 08:57, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Subst'ing Signatures

Why are you subst'ing signatures that are templates? It mignt be the right thing according to WP:SIG, but have you ever thought that maybe people do it on purpose??? People like me. My Sig is pretty complicated and it looks DISGUSTING in its full form, thats why its A LOT better as a nice, clean, simple template. It also does not prevent you from telling who the writer is since the template its-self is in my name space. Tell me which one you prefer:

Per the developers, who make this site run, the following was added to our signature policy:

Transclusions of templates and parser functions in signatures (like those which appear as {{User:Name/sig}}, for example) are forbidden, because the developers have determined them to be an unnecessary drain on the servers. Transcluded signatures require extra processing--whenever you change your signature source, all talk pages you have posted on must be re-cached.

Signature templates are also vandalism targets, and will be forever, even if the user leaves the project. Simple text signatures, which are stored along with the page content, use no more resources than the comments themselves and avoid these problems.

This cannot be changed: remember that developer statements about technical aspects of the site trump all others. As for the length of your signature, the only thing I can say is that you must remove the images, and should probably consider shortening the code. —METS501 (talk) 16:30, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for Wrangell Islands help

So sorry. I just didn't know where to begin.CharlesRobertCountofNesselrode 03:10, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

This move is part of an effort to make it look as if there is a US claim to certain Arctic islands of Russia. The US State Department has made it very clear that "None of the islands or rocks above were included in the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, and they have never been claimed by the United States, although Americans were involved in the discovery and exploration of some of them." [3] The move of Wrangel Island with one "l" (an island of Russia) to Wrangell Island (Northern) is based on the assertions of a small lobbying group called State Department Watch. These claims, along with the change in spelling, are supported only by this private group, and not backed up by any reliable source. Would you mind helping to undo these unjustified moves? Thanks. --Reuben 16:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong with your bot?

It has reviewed a number of satellite images including in the TC wikiproject, which has appropriate documentation and links where possible, and it appears to be suggestion mass deletions. I'm sorry. But actually, was it the edit that was the problem, or the edit summary? Was there something wrong with the edit itself? —METS501 (talk) 19:55, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Nothing was wrong with it, really. The files do qualify as fair use. I was just hoping they'd be deleted so that I could issue the user a copyright warning if they did it again. (Still could I suppose). You did an excellent job writing the fair use summaries. Sorry for pissing at you. -N 20:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
It's fine with me :-) Just don't forget: we never want people to do something wrong just to issue warnings and do a "gotcha!" type of block. —METS501 (talk) 20:13, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Deletion criteria question

I've been marking my photos previously uploaded to WP that are now on Commons with {{subst:ncd}}. They have been tagged with "This image does not give credit to uploader Zaui on Commons." First, I'm not sure what this means. The name of the uploader is shown on the image page on Commons, is this what is meant by 'credit'? Second, I uploaded most of them to Commons anyway and my user name (Zaui) is already there. What more is needed? Thanks in advance. — Zaui (talk) 16:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Whoops, that's a bug in the bot code. If the same person uploaded it, then there's really no need to give "credit". Thanks for letting me know. —METS501 (talk) 19:56, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

I would recommend deleting that userbox as it's very divisive. I have no idea what category it should go in. —METS501 (talk) 19:59, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Divisive?Chris Nelson 20:01, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, divisive (divisive = creating dissension or discord) The exact type of userbox that caused so much controversy in the past and doesn't help us get along at all. —METS501 (talk) 20:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Well I know what divisive means. I just don't see how the userbox could be controversial, it simply represents a well-known, long-running joke. I should point out that this joke does have it's own Wikipedia article. If the userbox goes, the article would have to go too. (I'd disagree with either move.)Chris Nelson 20:06, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, and I respect yours. I'm not going to go and delete it out of process, don't worry; I was just mentioning that I thought it was divisive. —METS501 (talk) 20:09, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Per your inquiry about the picture, I met him at the Miami Airport and took a picture with him. I edited it to cut myself out. Thanks --Iron Chef 23:45, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Wow! What a great shot! —METS501 (talk) 23:50, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I know its not the best picture for his article, but its better than none right? :) --Iron Chef 23:52, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Image deletion

Hi ^demon; I recommend you don't delete images from here as NowCommons when they are not in a category or article on commons. I could blame this on you being unaware of that rule, but when the message by my bot says it, that excuse isn't as valid anymore :-) —METS501 (talk) 13:30, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry about that. ^demon[omg plz] 13:32, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
No problem :-) —METS501 (talk) 13:35, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Bot trial approval

Hola Mets501,

Thanks for approving a trial for my bot request so quickly. A small question: Do I also need to receive approval to use AWB before proceeding with my bot trial? -- TypoBot 21:35, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Gracias.

I just approved you for AWB. :-) You won't have access to the auto-save, but you won't need it for the typo fixing. Also, you should be careful not to edit with your bot's account outside its approved functions (for example, the question that you posted on my talk page should have been done with your account, not your bot's). —METS501 (talk) 21:39, 25 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for addressing the issue of editing with my bot account! I wasn't sure. -- Saaga 21:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Could you do me a favour?

Regarding this, I'm not on IRC right now so I can't get to anybody else: could you pass the word to the other AWB admins to make sure this guy doesn't get himself into trouble? TIA HAND —Phil | Talk 08:14, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

No problem. Actually, a good place would be WP:AWB/DEV. I'll post there now. —METS501 (talk) 12:29, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
Cheers. Blooming Windows network security, won't let me connect out, Pidgin is baffled. (I think it's because when they fixed my broken machine they gave it a new name—which actually is correct now—and the firewall just doesn't know whoTF I am any more). Between that and having to revert to IE6, I'm well hacked off… HAND —Phil | Talk 12:38, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Looks like my worries were unfounded, although he could have expressed himself a little more clearly… Thanks anyway. —Phil | Talk 09:58, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Reverting

Why did you just revert about 15 or so edits by Anchor Link Bot? —METS501 (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Because I ran out of time to revert more. I've already sent a message to the bot operator to stop it, since it's free-association style of random comments serves no purpose. Notice that there's links inside comments - these are equally useless to both encyclopedia readers (who won't see the comment) adn editors (who can't follow the link by clicking on it). Stamp out useless bot edits, I say. --Wtshymanski 14:38, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
I think you need to see WP:MOS#Section management. —METS501 (talk) 14:40, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
I've seen it, now I see what Auto Link Bot is trying to do - but it's still a dumb idea even if in the Manual of Style. --Wtshymanski 17:48, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

TypoBot review

I've made the edits you requested for TypoBot's trial run. When you have the time, would you please review the edits and consider the bot for approval? Thanks! -- Saaga 01:10, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the bot approval! I'll make the necessary change regarding Manually assisted in the edit summary. -- Saaga 06:27, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

User:UBX

I noticed a user creating userboxes in the UBX space, particularly User:UBX/Waifs and User:UBX/Waifs2. Is this part of your move or should these be moved to the user's space? --TeaDrinker 01:32, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, but it doesn't bother me at all. It wasn't the intended purpose of the account, but I really have no problems with it. If it bothers you in any way, shape, or form, though, feel free to move them out of User:UBX's space. :-) —METS501 (talk) 01:35, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick attention. I have no problems with the boxes (other than the fair use issue which caught my attention and prompted my edits to them) but I wanted to make sure the location was on the up and up. Keep up the great work, --TeaDrinker 01:39, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks :-) —METS501 (talk) 03:10, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Userpage

Hey Mets, you up for redesigning my userpage? I would like the style to be a combination of Willow's and yours, with navy blue being the prevailing color. Feel free to test out anything you'd like. I will be on wikibreak for the next couple days, and will only be able to log in occasionally. No hurry whatsoever. Cheers and thanks.--Cronholm144 18:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

OK, I'll add it to the list :-) I'm going to do User:Reedy Boy's next if he still wants it. —METS501 (talk) 18:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Cool, :) talk to you then.--Cronholm144 19:10, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

beauty is in the eye of the beholder

ok, no one seems to agree with using the small tag, fine. :] it just looks quite sloppy having the big text that causes in this case the names to go onto other lines. it is hard to even tell what is what. anyway, while you are at it, could you fix the redirects at Trentino-Upper Adige/South Tyrol and Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol? they are locked down and pointing to the wrong page. cheerio.

No problem. Fixed. —METS501 (talk) 03:05, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

EndUN Userbox

Hi, you recently participated in the Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:DieWeisseRose/Userboxes/EndUN discussion.
