Mettu (some times also written as Metu) is located two days drive from the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. It is about 600 km to the south west via Jimma town. There are buses departing from Addis Ababa daily to Mettu and the other towns like Gambela. There is also a domestic flight to Gore town which is about 18 km from Mettu.

Mettu is known of its' higher cofee product nation wide, Mettu have a sor Hydro Electric power beside the single generator used to serve the city 24/7. Sor Hydro Electric also supplies power to naighbouring cites like Hurumu, Gore, Gambella and Yayu Mettu has 1 secondary high school, 1 middle school and 4 elementary schools. It is also the administrative and commercial center of the Illu Ababor zone of the oromya region. Mettu became the seat of the zonnal admisnitration in 1962 (Ethiopian calander) for the first time. The admisntartive seat was in Gore before 1962.
