Metzenbaum scissors

Metzenbaum scissors are surgical scissors designed for cutting delicate tissue. The scissors come in variable lengths and have a relatively long handle-to-blade ratio. They are constructed of tungsten carbide and its blades can be curved or straight. Also, the blade tips can be either sharp or blunt.

  • On the television sitcom M*A*S*H, Metzenbaum scissors are sometimes mentioned during scenes in the Operating Room.
  • They are mentioned during the emergency surgery of the detective shot guarding a government witness in the Steve McQueen film Bullitt, as McQueen's character looks on.
  • In the motion picture "The Man With Two Brains" Metzenbaum scissors are mentioned during each brain surgury by the actor Steve Martin.
