The Metropolitan Borough of Southwark was a metropolitan borough in the County of London.

The borough was created by the London Government Act 1899, taking over the area of St Saviours District Board of Works (the civil parishes of Southwark Christchurch and Southwark St Saviours) and the incorporated vestries of Newington and Southwark St George the Martyr.[1]

It included the areas now known as:

In 1955 the borough council unsuccessfully petitioned for the grant of city status.[2]

After the creation of the Greater London Council, from 1965 it was amalgamated into the London Borough of Southwark with the Metropolitan boroughs of Camberwell and Bermondsey.
