[edit] About Knowsley
The Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley is a metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England. It comprises the towns of Kirkby, Prescot, Huyton, Whiston, Halewood and Cronton; Kirkby, Huyton, and Prescot being the major commercial centres. It takes its name from the village of Knowsley.
The borough, which forms part of the Liverpool City Region, was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of Huyton-with-Roby Urban District, Kirkby Urban District and Prescot Urban District, along with most of Whiston Rural District and a small part of West Lancashire Rural District, all from the administrative county of Lancashire.
It is famed for Knowsley Hall and Knowsley Safari Park, and also has its own commercial radio station, KCR 106.7. Knowsley Community College also runs a student station in Knowsley 1251 MW KCC Live. Knowsley is also home to The Net 40, which is a weekly, user generated internet chart show, which is broadcast from the studio's of KCR 106.7.
Although many people pronounce Knowsley as "now-sley", the correct pronunciation is "nose-ley". Knowsley have recently spent a lot of time and money on regeneration and branding. Signs have been erected on the local motorway's stating "The future is Knowsley", where the highlighted words bare the phrase "The future is now". This has caused confusion about how to pronounce the name, amongst visitors to the borough.
The district contained the Cronton and Sutton Manor collieries, which closed in 1984 and 1991 respectively.
Steven Gerrard, a boyhood Liverpool fan and now the captain of Liverpool FC, was given the Freedom of the borough of Knowsley in December 2006. One of his privileges after being given the Freedom is that he is allowed to drive his sheep down the main street of his home town.
Other famous faces to have grown up in Knowsley include actor Sir Rex Harrison, footballers Terry McDermott and Phil Thompson, and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Other instantly recognisable, but less human, products of Knowsley include the Jaguar X-type and the Land Rover Freelander, built at the Halewood Operations plant, which now gives visitors a behind-the-scenes peek at the motor manufacturing process.
